JAGS CLASH WITH HOT MIDDLE TENNESSEE TEAM SATURDAY

excerpt:

... The Blue Raiders picked up their seventh win of the year Wednesday with a 77-62 victory at Ole Miss. MT jumped out to a 48-19 lead at halftime and shot 56.3 percent from 3-point land.

"The more I watch them on film, I'm extremely impressed," Graves stated. "They've got three guys that can really shoot the ball on the perimeter and a post presence. I think (Reggie) Upshaw is one of the most versatile players you're going to find. To have a 4-man with a 3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio, is outstanding. I really like the way he plays."

JaCorey Williams leads a group of three players averaging 14 points or better on the year. The transfer from Arkansas is putting up 20.1 points per contest, despite being held to a season-low 10 at Ole Miss.

"Williams gives them an added dimension of a low-post scorer with his versatility and athleticism," Graves noted. "He really feeds off their perimeter shooters."

Giddy Potts (14.4 ppg) and Reggie Upshaw (14.1 ppg) round out Middle Tennessee's double-digit scorers. Both are shooting greater than 50 percent from the floor, and Upshaw tops the team in rebounding (6.9 rpg).

"Upshaw is really the key to their team because he does a little bit of everything, from passing to rebounding, and if you fall asleep on him, he'll score 15-to-20 points on you.

"They present a lot of challenges because they can beat you in a lot of different ways," Graves stated. "They can beat you with their defense and score in transition, they can run very good sets and counters and get their post players involved, or their perimeter guys can make 3s at a high level. This is by far the biggest test that our defense has faced this year." .....

...A pair of teams look to maintain their hot starts at the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders face off against the South Alabama Jaguars.

The Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders will try to extend their winning streak to 6 games. MTSU made it 5 in a row by stunning the Ole Miss Rebels by a final score of 77-62 behind a game-high 20 points from Giddy Potts on 7 of 9 from the floor with 4 threes. Reggie Upshaw came in 2nd with 15 points to go along with a game-high 10 rebounds and 8 assists as part of his 2nd double-double of the season. Leading scorer for the season JaCorey Williams made 4 of 9 from the field for 10 points as the 3rd and final Blue Raider to notch double figures in the win. Williams leads Middle Tennessee with 20.1 points per game on a team-high 60.3% from the field while Upshaw is the team leader with 6.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. As a team, MTSU is scoring 77 points per game on the 23rd-best field goal percentage in D-I at 49.9% from the field, 37.1% from behind the arc and 61.5% from the foul line.

The South Alabama Jaguars will be looking to start a new win streak as they head towards conference play. The Jaguars were 5-0 before falling to Eastern Illinois, but rebounded nicely with a 78-55 win over Southern Miss. Georgi Boyanov led USA with a game-high 23 points on 9 of 13 from the floor with 4 threes. Shaq Calhoun was close behind in 2nd with 21 points with 5 threes and all the way in 3rd was Don MuepoKelly, who scored 10 points and 2 blocks in 18 minutes before fouling out of the game. Leading scorer Ken Williams made just 3 of 13 attempts on the night for 8 points, but dished out a game-high 8 assists while pulling down a team-high 6 rebounds. Williams leads the Jaguars with 14.4 points and 4.1 assists per game while MuepoKelly is grabbing a team-leading 7.1 rebounds per game. As a team, South Alabama is scoring 75.4 points per game on 45% from the floor and 33.1% from behind the arc but are making just 58.8% of their free throws, the 4th-worst percentage in D-I.

Middle Tennessee is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 vs. the Sun Belt. South Alabama is 5-14 ATS in their last 19 vs. C-USA and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 home games. The home team is 5-0 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.

Although the home team has done well against the number in this matchup, we can’t overlook the fact that Middle Tennessee has covered in 13 of the last 17 meetings between these two teams, and has to be riding high after beating Ole Miss. Winning on the road is never easy, but the Blue Raiders will be up to the task here....

made a small play on MT -3 but honestly feel we lose here. hoping to be pleasantly surprised

Big win... move to 8-1 on the year!! Time to sell out the Murphy Center for Vandy on Thursday. Everybody better be there!!

We looked great. This team looks unstoppable at times.

I didn't get to see the TN State game. How the hell did we lose that game and lose in the fashion that we lost?

We looked absolutely out of sync on offense. No movement, just chucking things up randomly. And defense in the post was horrible. Both of those things have been, to a large extent, fixed.
