I thought this was a done deal already...
Senate panel OKs boards for 3 universities, including MT
excerpt:
...Three state universities, including Middle Tennessee State University, moved closer to having independent governing boards Wednesday after a panel of state senators signed off on 24 perspective board members appointed by Gov. Bill Haslam.
The Senate Education Committee questioned each appointee individually during a meeting that lasted almost three hours. Although their support was never really in question, the lawmakers made it clear they intended to rigorously monitor activities on campus.
Republican Sen. Dolores Gresham of Somerville, who chairs the committee, promised a "substantive inquiry" as the universities moved away from the Tennessee Board of Regents college system and toward independent boards for the first time.
“We’ve not been here before. We’ve not done this before," Gresham said. "In essence, we’re making history. ... We don’t want to make this routine.”
The panel considered eight board members each for MTSU, the University of Memphis and East Tennessee State University. Three more university boards — for Tennessee State University, Austin Peay State University and Tennessee Tech University — will follow next week.
The full General Assembly is expected to approve the full slate of board members later this month.....
