..."We should play all teams in the Power 5 conferences," Saban said Wednesday. "If we did that, then if we were going to have bowl games, we should do the bowl games just like we do in the NCAA basketball tournament -- not by record but by some kind of power rating that gets you in a bowl game. If we did that, people would be a little less interested in maybe bowl games and more interested in expanding the playoff." .....

...Saban suggested a 10-game SEC schedule, for example, plus two Power 5 nonconference opponents during the regular season. Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher on Tuesday expressed similar thoughts to ESPN about nonconference scheduling in the playoff era.

"There's not enough games of interconference play to help judge how you're rating each league," Fisher said. "We get caught up in 'that league's the best league this year.' For instance, last year it was Big Ten, Big Ten. All of a sudden the ACC spanks them to death in bowl games, major games, big games. But maybe during that time of the year, [the Big Ten] was better. I think they do have a hard job because of only picking four teams." .....

I agree with the last paragraph, but his suggestion would probably push non-P5 schools back to FCS or into their own, new subdivision

I won't be done with college athletics as long as MT plays BkB at the highest level. But, as far as the PTB at the so-called "big-time" schools are concerned they would be glad to get rid of the riffraff and go it alone as far as FB is concerned. Would they let the others hang around in BkB and other sports. Who knows? Regardless, I don't expect any movement until the media money problem shakes out.

Two obvious consequences: The Wakes, Texan Techs, Northwesterns, and VUs of the world become the new 2nd tier, and travel for all schools will increase, especially for "minor" sports should a complete split occurred.

Will never happen.

That's all well and good for the 10 or so Alabama's of the college football world.

Do you think the Syracuse's and Minnesota's and Vandy's would go for it? They know they ain't making the playoffs.

Their season is made by squeaking into that 6 win threshold and making a bowl, and often that's by playing a slate heavy with G5 schools.

They aren't going to give that up to go 3-9 each year.

All this after the B10 commish just allowed his schools to play FCS teams again saying it was helpful to have the additional home game, help the little guys money wise, as well as good for the regional rivalry aspect of it.

If anything like Saban suggested we're to happen then I have no doubt there would be a new division of football.

SAC
Super athletic conference , join all of the non power 5. Set up regional divisions. Save money on travel and develop instant rivalries. Pretty simple really...

Really is a good idea. If they could get ahead of the power 5 and create this thing. Raise the price on all these body bag games and spilt all the proceeds among the SAC teams. Become a force to be reckoned with!

What Saban and Jimbo don't see is that this move would kill college sports altogether and here's why. If G5's and FCS are divorced from P5 access in CFB, those schools would also tell those P5's that they won't play them in MBB, WBB, Baseball, Track, etc. How will P5's get to the tourney through at large without the G5's and other mid majors?

Doug's point for football is spot on. Most p5 teams would suffer under this restructure. No bowls or hope of ever going postseason would kill their fanbases. It would hurt schools like UT as well. They'll go from 8 wins to 4 real quick. Saban needs to stick to just being a pompous ass and mind his own business.
