Skip Holtz is out at La. Tech

Stoops was quoted as saying he never thought someone would give an automatic contract extension for only winning 6 or 7 games in a year, but when he saw what his buddy Rick Stockstill got, he knew that he could push for that at Kentucky.**

I'd be happy with what Stoops has done. 3-2 in bowls, winning record, has finished ranked before and if they win bowl this year, should finish ranked again. Yeah his overall is still around .500 but last 4 years, 32-17.

Stock's last 4 years, 21-26.

And Kentucky will probably be in a position to buyout Stoops if it doesn’t go well. MT made the mistake in not having a realistic way to back out of Stocks contract if it went south. We have no money to pay him to go away.

We supposedly have it “on paper” but when those who have generously agreed to it actually step up still remains to be seen. With Stock’s facilities donation, I can’t see him taking anything less than what’s contractually owed to him (and I can’t blame him) but I could be wrong. Most of us wouldn’t either.

Even if MT had the money, Massaro isn't firing his buddy. Both came from South Carolina and that's all Massaro knows. Massaro has no aspirations either or he would've been smarter and worked hard to move up. This is no destination school, except for Stock after that outrageous golden parachute Massaro gave him.

Willie Simmons and David Bibee both “resigned” unexpectedly.
Simmons was arrested for suspicion of aggravated assault. Maybe he was told to resign or get fired and no idea what the outcome of that was.

if Brent said this is his only year at Middle, maybe, just maybe, it's because he knows his dad is retiring and wanted to coach with him at least once. As Brent moves on in his coaching profession, maybe Stock wants to spend some time with the grandkids while they are young. I can respect that aspect. Just wishful thinking.

If he is retiring this year, no doubt they will promote from within. If they were going to do a search, surely they would be smart enough to already announce it with signing day coming up instead of acting like it is business as usual.

If/when Stock retires, promoting from within this staff wouldn’t generate enough emotion or excitement to fill the Women’s Softball stadium. But given how we have done things since Coach Donnelly left, it wouldn’t surprise me in the least.

Would it surprise anyone if Dearmon was named HC next year with Stock jr being OC?

What’s with the fascination with Brent ? Why does everyone assume he will be a good play caller or head coach ?

I’m not buying it. Was he a good player ? Sure. But the correlation between a good player becoming a good coach isn’t as strong as most think it is.

he’s still got a ton to prove in my eyes before he’s anything more than a position coach.

I guess it is hard to pinpoint why I feel like he will. Most of the time it’s from an interview for me. I work in sales and feel a head coach is mostly a sales person. He seems to me that he would be good at selling his vision. That translates to a good head coach imo. All FBS coaches know the XOs (at least they should) so it’s about the other things.

Middle got the shaft in all aspects with CRS.

Sales person?? Our current HC couldn’t give away free T-Shirts or game tickets in the cafeteria. Sadly, someone even posted video evidence of it in here.

Why do you assume he won't be?

And Saban was an assistant for 17 years before he got his first HC gig at Toledo.
Young offensive minded coaches are a hot commodity these days. I really have no clue how Brent is as a coach, but he has worked with Kendall Briles and Lane Kiffin. If he is good I am sure he will get his chance in the SEC soon.

I don’t assume anything

I know in big boy lines of work you have to prove yourself 99% of the time. The other 1% is nepotism.
I think guys like Kiffin and Briles having him on staff says that they do at least see potential. Maybe him being here was nepotism, or maybe it wasn’t.

i don’t even care about the position coach thing. Fine, whatever. I have no problem Rick making him WRs coach.

But when people start talking about head coach type stuff….just no. He still has a ton to prove. A ton.

When Brent was a player his dad often talked about how he was even harder on him than most players, because he needed to be. He needed to show everyone on the team Brent wasn’t getting any special privilege.

it should be absolutely no different now that he’s on the coaching staff. So like I said. He’s got a lot to prove.

I hope he gets a chance somewhere down the road. Maybe after he’s been a full fledged coordinator for a few years.
It once was called "seasoning". Brent has very little. Now it's in vogue to expect to move up quickly (or start out at the top) rather than biding your time and proving yourself in every level as you move up.
Not only is this seen in education and coaching but in other endeavors such as politics. Changes in society have made us want it and want it now.

I would bet $500.00 that Brent Stockstill could call a better game than Dearmon. As far as HC, he would need to be an OC for a while to get there but I'd throw him in as the OC now. Can't be worse than this Dearmon dude. Brent knows offense and would mix the spread with this RPO stuff pretty well. His energy is good and he's pretty dang smart. I'd be fine with it.

Call me crazy, but being a great play caller on one side of the ball doesn't translate to also being able to run an entire team. There is so much more to juggle. Now as people get experience it tends to even out and then maybe they can do it, but if someone has one great year calling offensive plays at age 27 (as an example) that doesn't show great HC potential (yet). Do that for a few years then maybe you take a chance to run your WHOLE team.

He's been in the profession for three seasons, and this is his third stop.

Nepotism? Go watch his interview, it's easy to see the nepotism. Only question I saw in it was "Why should I hire you" and the other hiring board members looked passed out asleep? Daddy had already made up his mind. Probably negotiated at the Thanksgiving table. Massaro excuse of "everybody else does it" was crap. They do it and it never works out. Never do business with friends and family.

Can he be a good coach? Maybe, but he needs to go to another school and get some legit experience. The stigma of he wouldn't have that job if not for CRS needs to be scrubbed off. I've heard many fans disgruntled with that hire, right or wrong, it's there.

Not crazy at all.

Some are just meant to be no more than a coordinator, and that's ok. They can make a good living at it.
