excerpt:

...The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders are coming off a four-win season that ended with them losing five of their last seven games. The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders averaged 26.3 points per game and 408.3 yards while allowing an average of 29.9 points and 459.3 yards per game. MTSU returns both of its quarterbacks from last season in Chase Cunningham and Asher O'Hara, a duo that combined for 2,837 yards, 22 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Jarrin Pierce is the leading returning receiver for the Blue Raiders with his 562 receiving yards and four touchdowns, and Chaton Mobley is coming off a season where he averaged four rushing yards per carry and scored three touchdowns on 52 touches. Defensively, linebacker DQ Thomas was second on the team with 74 tackles, Rakavian Poydras had a sack and a quarterback hurry and Reed Blankenship had two interceptions and three pass deflections. Middle Tennessee return more than enough to where it should like its chances for an improved season.

The Army Black Knights are coming off a five-win season that ended with them losing seven of their last nine games. The Army Black Knights averaged 28.5 points per game and 379.2 yards while allowing an average of 23 points and 342.3 yards per game. Army has to find a starting quarterback to replace Kelvin Hopkins Jr., and it looks like Christian Anderson is going to get that chance with Jabari Laws being the backup. Running back Sandon McCoy returns after 576 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns, and Army has a handful of receivers back for another season in Camden Harrison, Artice Hobbs IV and Michael Roberts. Defensively, linebacker Arik Smith returns after 83 tackles, Edriece Patterson is still on the line after three sacks and Kwabena Bonsu is coming off a season where he had six tackles for loss. Army has a good enough defense to improve on last years efforts, but the main focus is finding a more effective starting quarterback.

The Blue Raiders are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as an underdog and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games. The Black Knights are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 non-conference games, 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 games in September and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall. The over is 5-1 in Blue Raiders last 6 games overall. The over is 4-0 in Black Knights last 4 home games.

The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders are one of those teams that's had issues the last couple of years whenever stepping up in competition. The Army Black Knights have quarterback questions, which isn't what you want when running the triple-option offense, but they have enough experience on both sides of the ball and should be solid enough defensively to squeeze out a victory.....

Line is 5.5
I thought we would be bigger dogs
The first game of the year is always the most unpredictable BUT we can safely predict that Rick will play not to lose and so the Raiders could lose by 3 or 23.

I'd like to know how full they expect the stadium to be, if at all.

Their AD sent out an email in June saying they are developing plans for 100%, 45% & 35% capacity. Given the current status, I would guess the 35% or 13,500, is the plan.

For me all eyes will be on the defensive line. We have to replace some key starters there but we have some serious young talent across the defensive front. They could be surprisingly good. Front 7 as a whole might surprise people this year. Not sold on the Maryland transfer Brett Shepherd but I guess we'll see how he does. Jonathan Butler should be a workhorse for us and DQ is DQ.

Our defense could be surprisingly good this year and we might see it starting tomorrow. We are young but more talented than we have been in a while.

I think we could see some struggles on offense, especially early in the year. We are young on the OL, lost 2 RB's that we expected to play, and have to replace a key WR in Ty Lee. O'Hara is going to have to shoulder a lot especially the first few games.

We need some young players to step up on the offense and hopefully that starts tomorrow.

...The Blue Raiders are 1-8 SU (2-7 ATS) versus FBS opponents in season openers under head coach Rick Stockstill.

Over is 9-1 in Middle Tennessee's last nine games versus nonconference opponents dating to 2018.

Army is 4-11 ATS in season openers in the past 15 seasons, but three of those covers came since 2014 under head coach Jeff Monken.

Stats to know: Both teams rank near the bottom in percent of returning production on defense. Middle Tennessee's defense returns players who accounted for 51% (111th) of its tackles in 2019 while Army gets back 49% (114th)....

55 - 20 MT. Asher puts himself on the short list for heisman watch. Legs, arm, mind. Kid has it all! Even with subpar running game behind him he dominates!

If we win the toss, would you guys defer or receive? If we get the ball first, we have a chance to score first and immediately put Army in position to play from behind, which is outside their comfort zone. But that would also run the risk of Army doubling us up with touchdowns right before the half and right after the half, which we may never recover from. Normally I always support deferring the choice, but this game might be an exception to that general rule.

Take the ball. I don't trust our defense and we need any edge we can get.

College football odds, picks, predictions for Week 1, 2020: Proven model gives best bets
SportsLine's advanced computer model simulated every Week 1 college football game 10,000 times.

...One of the top Week 1 college football picks the model is recommending: Army (-3) covers at home against Middle Tennessee at 1:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.

The Black Knights featured one of the nation's most effective grounds games in 2019. In fact, Army averaged 297.2 yards per game on the ground last season, which ranked third in the country.

Running back Sandon McCoy averaged 4.3 yards per carry and scored 10 rushing touchdowns last season. Meanwhile, MTSU's defense gave up an average of 29.90 points per game, which ranked 81st in the country.

The model is calling for the Black Knights to rush for nearly 250 yards against the Blue Raiders on Saturday. The model says Army covers the spread in over 60 percent of simulations, while the under (54) also has plenty of value because that hits nearly 70 percent of the time.....
