In Monroe, LA, the Raiders (12-13, 7-7) allowed 48 2nd half points in a 82-76 loss to Louisiana-Monroe. Kevin Kanaskie let MT with 19 points.

2-10-07: In Bowling Green, KY, the Raiders (12-14, 7-8) fell 65-53 to Western Kentucky. Tim Blue led MT with 12 points and 9 rebounds.

2-6-97:
In Murfreesboro, MT (15-9, 8-5) trailed 51-35 with 11 minutes left but came back and won 68-65, when Roni Bailey hit a 27-footer at the buzzer. Nod Carter led Raider scorers with 23 points.

2-8-97: In Cookeville, TN, the Raiders (15-10, 8-6) lost 77-68 to Tennessee Tech. Torrey Moore led MT with 21 points.

2-7-87:
In Murfreesboro, MT (17-3, 8-1) beat Akron 64-62, when Duane Washington shot with 3 seconds left and missed, but Dwayne Rainey rebounded and scored as time expired. Washington led MT in scoring with 14 points for the Raiders 27th straight victory in the Murphy Center.

2-9-87: In Murfreesboro, MT (18-3, 9-1) beat Youngstown State 89-79 in overtime. Andrew Tunstill led the Raiders with 22 points and Duane Washington had 11 of his 17 points in the overtime period. Kerry Hammonds scored 6 points to become MT's 16th 1,000-point career scorer.

2-11-87: In Montgomery, AL, the Raiders (19-3) beat Alabama State 81-79. Andrew Tunstill and Chris Rainey led MT with 17 points each.

2-5-77:
In Murfreesboro, Lewis Mack hit a 30-foot shot with 2 seconds left to force overtime, and MT (15-5, 6-2) beat Tennessee Tech 98-91. Mack led the Raiders with 29 points and Greg Joyner scored 25.

2-7-77: In Murfreesboro, MT (16-5, 7-2) beat East Tennessee State 78-67, led by 18 points from Bob Martin.

In Chattanooga, TN, the Raiders (8-10) lost to Chattanooga 106-87. Jay Cole had 23 points and Art Polk had 20.


2-7-67: Jim Freeman wrote in the 2-7-67 issue of the Sidelines. He was the Sports Editor.

Tech is trying to get someone to donate a trophy similar to Harvey to go to the winner of the basketball games, seeing as how they can't seem to ever get possession of the football trophy.


2-11-67: In Murfreesboro, MT (9-10, 3-6) beat Tennessee Tech 83-72 led by Ed Cannon's 32 points and 17 rebounds. Bobby Gardner also scored 21 points.

In Johnson City, TN, the Raiders (7-9) beat Milligan College 91-83 led by 25 points from Frank Davis.

2-9-57:
In Johnson City, TN, Oscar Fitzgerald scored 18 points, and MT (8-9) beat East Tennessee State 79-61.

70 Years Ago This Week
2-7-47:
E.W. “Wink” Midgett resigned as head football coach and Athletic Director at Middle Tennessee.
Upon returning from the Navy, Midgett had agreed to remain coach until a replacement could be found. After about a year, he chose to resign. He remained as a faculty member.

At some point between 2-5-47 and 2-10-47, per the media guide, MT beat Martin College 51-44 to improve to 11-5. The DNJ provided no coverage.

2-11-47: In Cookeville, TN, the Raiders (11-6) lost 52-40 to Tennessee Tech. Hank Brandon and Bud Harmening each had 15 points for MT.

I miss seeing Jim at athletic events. RIP Jim

MT FB would win again against tech that fall, but ten out of the next 11 years, tech would beat Middle. That would not change until Boots' first year in 79.
