FOOTBALL Middle Tennessee at Jacksonville State Game Thread

Ethan Ellis at LT. Clean pocket and time. Nick Vattiato great pass to Omari Kelly. 38-yard gain. Ball at Jax State 37

41-YARD FIELD GOAL BY ZEKE RANKIN GOOD

Rankin puts the team on the board again.

Middle Tennessee: 13
Jacksonville State: 21
9:13 3Q

Jordan Thompson over-runs what would've been a HUGE sack on 3rd down in Blue Raider territory. Huff scrambles to pick up the first and get in the red zone

2-YARD RUSHING TOUCHDOWN BY TYLER HUFF

Jacksonville State makes Middle Tennessee pay for the missed sack and extends the lead.

Middle Tennessee: 13
Jacksonville State: 28
5:34 3Q

We're just bad. Team has no identity or strengths. Throwing it up to Holden Willis and Kelly is flashy but isn't enough to win games. Not even close actually. We need a bigger QB like theirs who can run with some authority. That's what is winning them this game. They're averaging 8.3 YPC to our 3.7. Same story, different day.

Also cannot trade FG's for TD's with a team like this. Should have been going for it on 4th down. Too late now, oh well. It is so painful being a fan of this school

We absolutely, 100% must have a dual threat QB. NV can move a little bit around the pocket and evade a rush, but is ineffective as a running threat.

Personally, I think Jax has the right offense for a school at our level. If you build a high level passing game, the portal will pick it apart. Get yourself a running QB and run the read/option - there's tons of those kids in high schools.

The defense needs more and better players. I am not going to call out #'s, but there have been times where guys are positioned perfectly to make a play, and just can't do it. The strength of the D is the line, and they're just gassed at this point - they don't have 4th quarter depth.

We suck... Tackling has been atrocious all night.

Look at Kennesaw, has Liberty on their heels right now. Liberty 17, KSU 27 with 4:13 left in the 4th.

4-YARD RECEIVING TOUCHDOWN BY MYLES BUTLER

Vattiato finds Alabama native Butler on 4th and 3 from the 4 for six. Rankin XP good.

Middle Tennessee: 20
Jacksonville State: 35
11:33 4Q

Based on the graphic they just showed, we are going to give up 400+ yds rushing. Unacceptable!

26-YARD RUSHING TOUCHDOWN BY ANDREW PAUL

Welp.

Middle Tennessee: 20
Jacksonville State: 42
6:11 4Q

JSU averaging 8.5 YPC.....

Tre Stewart 210 yards on 21 carries for 10 YPC average.....

They've only completed 10 passes all night... Was there ever a thought to load the box and make them beat us throwing the ball? Put 8 in the box and dare them. There is nothing more maddening than letting a team run wild on you, which unfortunately was quite predictable with this bunch. I really do believe it takes effort to be this bad. Football is not rocket science.

And this coach wants to run a 3-4 base? Boy. We are going to be looking for a new coach in 2-3 years, assuming McPhee doesn't give him a 5 year extension this off season........

I mean seriously did these guys not tackle in high school to get a college footbal offer because they damn sure don’t display a single fundamental of tackling. It’s like they hope to trip the guy with the ball.

Nice to watch a game without silly turnovers and crazy penalties. Didn't beat ourselves, but man, that was the worst display of tackling I have ever seen at any level. It was awful!

Yep. On par with with pop warner pee wee teams I’ve seen as I mentioned last night.

I’m only surprised it was only 22. The disparity between our defense and opponents offenses and our offense and opponents defenses is astonishing. Only Nick, Omar, and Willis kept us in remotely in the game. How many passes did the other guys drop?

But back to my original point. Consider I watched our RBs actually have a hole a few times and to be tracked down from behind by defensive linemen and not even make a 3 yard gain. I thought it was all on our line but good grief ours backs are slow and do not ever break tackles. Not even arm tackles. They just go down as soon as a whiff of air passes by. On the flip side our defense seems to think one hand touch is the name of the game. I lost how many times the defense tried to arm tackle with one arm. And the number of times they weren’t even in a good position to tackle at all. Just abysmal.

We have a dearth of talent and fundamentals. Not a good combination.

This is one season long tryout for next years two deep and so far I think probably only a handful are candidates for the depth chart and probably they are eyeing the portal. Lots of work ahead.

Can we please stop with the quick screens! Theyve blown them up all night!
Those were all wasted downs and lost yards & got a few players hung out to dry. Not sure it was truly a screen, will have to go back and look, but there were only 2 “sideline passes” that went for positive yards that I recall. One to Kelly & one on the Jax sideline to Willis that he managed to make some big yardage down the boundary out of nothing. Those plays when the vertical passes are working just infuriate me. Keep doing what works until they stop it!!! We continue to stop ourself with these wasted low probability plays.

I couldn’t name you one guy who stood out in a good way on the defense last night. I’d sign 2 dozen portal guys on D at a minimum.

I did think the DL held their own in the first half, but the line was clearly worn out by the 2nd half with JSUs running game. They just don’t have the depth needed there. If you play a team that runs as much as JSU you need to rotate guys and we don’t have that depth on our roster.

As for the back portions of the defense - we just don’t have football players there. I don’t like calling guys out on that do appear to be playing hard, but I’m not sure we’d get less effective football if we just pulled some kids out of the stands.

Looks like our defense is playing flag football.
