3 things to know about Alabama A&M

Big play O’Darius: The Bulldogs’ offense was far from productive last season — they ranked outside the top 80 in the FCS in both total and scoring offense — but good things seemed to happen every time quarterback De’Angelo Ballard got the ball into O’Darius Williams’ hands. Playing in his first full season as a junior, the wide receiver turned 18 catches into 376 yards — an average of 20.9 yards per reception — and four touchdowns. The offense would do well to get more big plays out of the senior wideout this season.

Brothers Brower: No, you’re not seeing double: Second-leading returning rusher Byran Brower (278 yards on 81 carries) and last year’s leading tackler Bryan Brower (76) are two different people. But the brothers from Mobile should each play a significant role for Alabama A&M in their junior seasons. Byran should be in line for an increased role in the running game behind Harvey Harris after the graduation of Brandon Eldemire, and Bryan will be counted on to again anchor the defense from the linebacker position.

Special weapon: Outside of linebacker Bryan Bower, the only player Alabama A&M placed on the preseason All-SWAC team was junior return specialist Octayvious Miles, who finished second in the FCS with 1,002 kick return yards last year. A lot of that was volume — he returned 47 kicks in 11 games — but Miles did average 21.3 yards per attempt, including a 99-yard touchdown in a win over Jackson State.
