KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz is making a campaign stop in Knoxville Tuesday as part of his “Take-Off with Ted Cruz Country Christmas Tour.”

Cruz is speaking to a crowd Tuesday morning at the Farragut High School gymnasium.

Ted will also be in Nashville this afternoon at 1:30 p.m.CT. We’ll post details about a live stream of that event later this morning.

The U.S. Senator from Texas began his 12 city tour on Thursday, December 17, with rallies in Las Vegas and Minnesota. Cruz will also speak in Nashville that day, at Rocketown, 601 4th Avenue South.

All of the cities he has chosen to speak at are part of “Super Tuesday” primary on March 1. He is the fourth GOP candidate to visit Knoxville.

“For the top two presidential contenders on the republican side to come to Knoxville, I think it speaks tremendous volumes about Tennessee and how important Tennessee is and how important it’s going to be on Super Tuesday in the March 1 primary,” said Representative Jason Zachary.

Knoxville has become a popular campaign stop and Maryville College political science professor, Dr. Mark O’Gorman, said Senator Cruz won’t be the last to visit.

“The Knoxville airport is going to be real busy. A lot of GOP candidates are going to show up on the runway in the next few weeks,” he said, adding that there is a reason Knoxville is so popular with the GOP. “Ted Cruz’s support in some part comes from evangelical Christians and I think there’s a very strong cohort of that in East-Middle Tennessee and not surprisingly that’s probably why he’s making Knoxville his base camp for his tour.”

Cruz follows in the footsteps of fellow GOP hopeful Donald Trump who visited Knoxville last month.
