Any stories from you all about a funny or entertaining occurance while attending a MT sporting event?

I was around 10-12 years old in the late eighties and one thing that I remember is going to an away basketball game at Austin Peay. My memory is a bit fuzzy so anyone jump in...

Lake Kelly was APSU's coach and after a technical foul was called (I can't remember if it was on MT or Austin Peay), Lake grabs the PA microphone and says to the MT fans... "Will you MTSU people shut up?!?" Our section went wild. I'm certain we went to win that game.

Any corrections would be appreciated...but it was hilarious as I recall.

Attended MT/WKU basketball game at WKU a long long time ago. Each time WKU's band would play their fight song, a group of MT students promptly followed the last note of their fight song with the "M...T...S..U. MTSU, MTSU. Go..Raiders, Go!"

After about the third time that happened, the WKU band caught on and they began immediately playing another song after the fight song so they could drown out the MT students. It was a great display of mind control.

2005 Sun Belt basketball tournament was held at North Texas. This coincided of course with the Mean Green’s 4 year streak of being Sun Belt football champions. One of the guys I made the trip with successfully negotiated his way into the old Fouts Field and relieved himself on the 50 yard line as a way of honoring the Mean Green’s championship streak.

January 1990, at Austin Peay. The previous spring, Tennessee was hiring a new coach and Bruce Stewart was quoted as saying he would crawl on his hands and knees to Knoxville, to get the job. That night, at halftime, Austin Peay had a "Bruce Stewart Crawling Contest" where contestants started on one end of the court, that was labeled "Murfreesboro", in a blue T-shirt and crawled to mid-court. At mid-court, they changed into an orange T-shirt and crawled to the other end of the court that was labeled "Knoxville." Then they had to crawl back to mid-court, put the blue T-shirt on and crawl back to "Murfreesboro."
Apparently Stewart wasn't amused because the 2nd half was all Blue Raiders and over 100 points were put on the board.

MT Glenn....that is HILARIOUS.

Someone who shall remain nameless told me story one time of when he was an undergrad in the 80's. I can't remember who he said we were playing in basketball, but a player on the opposing team had been busted a few days before on a drug charge. The night of the game, our student body help up ziploc bags of flour, chanting "Just Say No". I thought that was pretty clever.

You all are bringing back some great memories!

I was at Austin Peay both nights mentioned above. My memory is bit fuzzy on the exact wording too but the account above is accurate. What I recall is the AP fans being disgruntled with the officials, and some threw something on the court (ice perhaps?). They asked Lake to get on the PA system to address the crowd. MT fans started chanting "Let's Go Blue" repeatedly prompting Kelly to tell the MT fans to "shut up" so he could address the AP fans. We roared even louder.

And yep, had to laugh at the creativity of the "crawl to Knoxville" contest. Bruce Stewart sure had some special teams back in the day. He was a heck of a coach.

One Stewart era happening I recall was when Bobby Huggins was at Akron. We had some battles. At the time, Dick Vitale referred to Stewart and Huggins as the best young coaches in America. Huggins was/is a firecracker and always worked the refs. Some students snuck up into the rafters of Murphy Center during a game. They dropped a banner that read "Quit Bitchin Bobby".

Other highlights for me include:
In the 80's a Homecoming float was in the endzone area on display. It caught fire and was completely destroyed.

The Chicken (aka San Diego Chicken) came and performed during an MT basketball game. Always entertaining to see The Chicken.

The Youngstown State coaches pants ripping when he kneeled down during a game. He was true to his team colors as his undies were red and on display for all to see.

Dick Fick getting tossed seconds into a basketball game. He was worth the price of admission to watch.

I do recall those "bags" that simulated coke that the player was arrested for dealing. I think it was a TSU game. And I know for a fact during a TSU game a former TSU player was drunk and courtside. He started yelling at the officials who tossed him. He grabbed hold of the goal supports and had to be forcibly removed by police. When they got him loose, he flipped the fans off while being escorted out.

And one of our darker days, I was courtside in 1990 when MT and Tech had an all out brawl. Multiple fights all over the court. Once split up, another would break out. There were so many suspensions that OVC Commish Dan Beebe said we could break them up over multiple games. Bruce Stewart said nah, we will go on an take them causing us to forfeit our next game at TSU because we didn't have enough players. That prompted TSU to cry because that was a big ticket game. Ultimately, MT had tryouts and one of the so called walk on's who helped while others sat out their suspensions was Kenny Tippins. Tippins played football for Boots and was back in school after the season he played as an Atlanta Falcon in the NFL.

Best post yet in this string. Back in the day, before participation trophies became a thing. Good times. Great stories.

We were playing Peay when they had the great Fly Williams in the Murph. One our students dressed up as a can of bug spray and went onto the court an sprayed the Fly with something. He failed to see the humor and proceeded to chase the student into the stands! The Police had to intervene but no charges were filed. Fly proceeded to hang 30 on us, but I think we still won. He was an amazing talent.

The late Dick Fick of Morehead State, once during the game, went into our stands and stayed for over 5 minutes visiting with our folks. He told them that Middle was the best job in the OVC and that he would be available after the season!
The previous year he was ejected from our game for mooning the ref’s during the game. He was a piece of work!

There were several football players... another was Mike Caldwell

You are correct! I knew Caldwell had played basketball but I was thinking he just started out as a two sport athlete. However, he tried out during the suspensions and made the team.

I also looked up Kenny Tippins, and while he did have a good career with the Falcons, at the time of his short college basketball stint he was actually with the Cowboys. At the time, that was a big deal and he was a big name. But Caldwell would later become even bigger.

Is there a story of Dick Fick ordering a pizza court side and eating it while coaching?
Sure sounds like him. His act was great if you only saw it once a year. I understand it got old quick if you saw it every game in Morehead,

What football game was it where Boots cut the football TV feed at halftime because of attendance? 😂

I believe it was in Andy’s last two years. I may have to search the old Delphi boards for that one.

For those that started following in the 2010s, this site was where it was at before 2007. http://forums.delphiforums.com/mtraiders
I think you have to subscribe now to see old messages but this pretty much has the history of MT sports and its fans leading up to and during our transition to 1-A.
It needs to be archived somehow. Great memories.

There was the old rivals board around 98-99 and the big split to the now defunct blueraiderzone but Delphi was the last place where we were all unified.

That board was great fun. Back when I gave a $hit ;)

Dick Fick flipped me off during a game back when I was student. A rare instance of someone flipping me off and me being glad about it. We shook hands after the game. He was friendly each time I met him even with me being a trash talking opposing student fan.

I am pretty sure you were my RA in my first year at MT. First name B******n?

Yes, and for some reason unknown to me, suddenly everyone is really encouraging of me constantly cheering me on with Let's go..........! Sure is nice of everyone to cheer me on these days.

Your username has made it easy for me to remember you all these years. I've changed username a few times over the years including the one unfortunate time I went with the website pseudo-random generated username to which I was completely ignorant of rather lewd and suggestive name. Then at a game, one of the guys mentioned my weird or sick sense of humor with my username to which the realization horrified me. I then immediately changed my username. It was MTB8 if I recall correctly.

Love it Duke.
You’re one in a million man! 👊

I was BlueRaiderTN and BigBlueJohn on the ole Delphi boards.

I was kicked out of the only other board I was a member of after becoming a MT Alum. May the BRZ Rest In Peace 😂😂

And I was spot on right in my predictions after the 3-year contract extension. 😂

I’m surprised we got this far. Seriously though it is hard to believe that was 20 years ago. Maybe one day we will get to enjoy some good times like that again around BR football. They’ve been few and far between.
I agree. The thing is my interest/priority level for MT athletics has dwindled down to the level of miniscule and it's doubtful it will ever rise much above that. Good memories, though.
