Motlow all-time leading scorer Bob Martin elected to TCCAA Hall of Fame

excerpt:

...After four successful years of military service and his discharge, Martin came home to see if he could compete on the college basketball court by walking on at Motlow. Daves, the head coach of the Bucks from 1969-78 and the College's first athletic director until 1985, was elected to the TCCAA Hall of Fame himself in 1987.

Not only did Martin compete at the junior college level, but he dominated. His freshman season (1974-75) was, and still is, easily the greatest single season in school history. He set single season school records that still stand today, including total point (860), total rebounds (472), rebounds per game (15.2), and blocked shots (153). His 28.3 points per game record stood for 15 years until it was broken by Tim Fant (29.7) in 1990. Martin was named an Honorable Mention All-American by the National Junior College Athletic Association following his freshman season.

Not only was Martin consistent throughout that freshman season, but he also had some tremendous individual games. On Feb. 15, 1975, he scored 45 points, which is still tied for fourth all-time at Motlow. He holds three of the top five spots for rebounds in a single game, pulling down 26, 25 and 23 respectively.

Despite the almost 45 years that have passed since Martin suited up in the green and gold, and the many great players that have followed him, he still holds the all-time career record for rebounds (773), rebounds per game (14.4), and blocked shots (239). His 1,236 total points is fifth all time, and his 24.2 points per game career scoring average is third.

Although Martin wasn't able to maintain the same pace in his sophomore season due to minor injuries and other circumstances, he continued to perform extremely well for the Bucks, hauling in 12 rebounds per game. His accolades and performance caught the eye of Head Coach Jimmy Earle at Middle Tennessee State University.

Earle, a military veteran himself and a member of the TCCAA Hall of Fame as well, signed Martin to come to Murfreesboro. While at MTSU, Martin's team won the Ohio Valley Conference regular season and tournament championship, and Martin was named all-conference and Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

He averaged 15.5 points during his 55-game career at MTSU, including leading the team his junior season averaging 17.9 points per game. In addition, he led the Blue Raiders in rebounding both years, averaging 8.4 his junior season and 7.9 in his senior year.....
