Passing of Keith Jackson got me to thinking what I miss from college football on Saturdays from decades ago...

Anybody remember Leonard's Losers? This was on radio weekly during football season and it was something you made time to listen to...

Oh, yes!! Leonard's Losers used to air Fridays over 1450 WGNS. Think it was in 5:30 pm segment as I recall. I remember the show intro and closing by Percy Peabody and some of the colorful references given to the school mascots, such as the "Pope's Pupils" for Notre Dame and "Pachyderms" for Alabama and upsetting a bee hive to describe the strength of the Georgia Tech Yellowjackets. Very humorous and loved the segment.

Get me outta here percy!

When I was young, Saturday morning football coverage started with Leonard. Some of my best early childhood memories was catching Leondard's Losers at the beginning of a football Saturday and ending the night searching AM radio with my dad to find Larry Munson, Jack Cristil, John Ward, Jim Hawthorne, or John Forney to get score updates since we didn't have ESPN (or cable) back then.

Great memories....

Out of town AM Radio at night was awesome! Stations that I frequently listened to for sports and talk in my younger days were: 540 WGTO (Cypress Gardens FL), 700 WLW (Cincinnati), 720 WGN (Chicago), 750 WSB (Atlanta), 760 WJR (Detroit), 840 WHAS (Louisville), 870 WWL (New Orelans), 880 WCBS (New York), 1120 KMOX (St Louis), 1190 WOWO (Fort Wayne), 1530 WCKY (Cincinnati) just to name a few on the slide rule dial. Before cable TV, this was the primary method to keep up with your favorite team, if the game was not televised.

I definitely remember listening to his show on Saturday mornings over in East Tennessee. Fond memories of being with my dad in his pickup truck when Leonard’s Losers was on the air. It was a truly unique show. Much more about the entertainment than the X’s and O’s. Great show.

Leonard Postero
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leonard Anthony Postero, Sr. (December 11, 1922 – July 20, 2001) was a native of Athens, Georgia, known for his syndicated radio show, Leonard's Losers. He was a 1943 graduate of the University of Georgia and served as an aviator in the United States Navy from 1943–45.[1]

Leonard's Losers[edit]
In 1958, Postero taped his first Leonard's Losers radio show at WRFC-AM in Athens. The show described college football matchups and then predicted which team would lose. Postero taped his show using a pseudonym of "Leonard Postosties" and was introduced by his sidekick "Percy Peabody" (also voiced by Postero). The show's "schtick" was a rural delivery style (à la Jerry Clower) and comedic scripts using alternate team nicknames related to the school mascot or the school itself. Some of these references included "riflemen" for the University of Tennessee Volunteers, "red clay hounds" for the University of Georgia Bulldogs, "giant water lizards" for the University of Florida Gators, "pachyderms" for the University of Alabama (because of their elephant mascot), and "the Pope's pupils" for the University of Notre Dame (for its status as a Catholic university). Leonard claimed that he possessed a "little smart pill machine" to come up with his prognostications and always closed his broadcast with a plea to his sidekick to "get me outta here, Percy." A game might be described as follows:

"Phillip Fulmer leads his Rifleman into the Athens Kennel for a shooting match with Jim Donnan's Pack of Drool Dogs. The Volunteer Army has owned the K-9s of late, while the Red Clay Hounds think it's about time to sink their teeth into the Big Orange Rifle Brigade. The Knoxville Army is angry after last week, but the Athens Dawgs will get the job done. Leonard's Loser? Tennessee"

At the height of its popularity, Leonard's Losers was carried on over 1400 radio stations, including Armed Forces Radio. Postero also published a weekly newsletter called Leonard's Losers.[1]

Postero retired in 1999 and a group of Athens businessmen purchased the show.[1] As part of the transition, the new voice of Leonard Postosties was introduced as Leonard's nephew though there was no relation between the two.

After the 2005 season, a message appeared on the website saying that due to personal reasons Leonard was unable to make his predictions and hoped to return. This message remained on the website until 2007 when the website closed.

Leonard Postero was inducted into the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame on Saturday, October 19, 2013 as a legacy inductee for his show Leonard's Losers.[2]

Pretty sure I was listening to it in the early seventies as a college student, and I remember the newsletter as well.

Loved him.... they would go something like this .....

Coach Dooley will have his young pups ready Saturday as they host Bill Currys North Avenue Hornets in a battle for the governors trophy. Those canines better be ready and Herschel will likely be stomping on those flyin insects all afternoon. Leonard's Loser.... Georgia Tech
