2-22-97: In Murfreesboro, on Senior Night for Roni Bailey, Nod Carter, Torrey Moore and Chad Wampler, the Raiders (18-11, 11-7) beat Tennessee-Martin 96-71. Roni Bailey matched his career high of 28 points and the allowed MT to be a host in the opening round of the OVC tournament.
In Auburn, AL, MT baseball opened the season by being swept 4-1 and 11-7 by 18th ranked Auburn.
2-23-97: In Auburn, AL, the Raider baseball team fell 9-3 to Auburn. Ryan Dillard had two RBIs for MT.
2-25-97: In Murfreesboro, MT (19-11) beat Southeast Missouri State 88-74 in the first round of the OVC tournament. The Raiders had 22 point lead cut to 5 before they regained control and earned their first tournament victory since beating Eastern Kentucky in 1991. Nod Carter led MT in scoring with 25 points as the Raiders avoided a third loss to SEMO this season.
In Tuscaloosa, AL, the MT (0-4) lost 12-5 to Alabama. Clay Snellgrove hit a 2-run homer in the 7th inning to give the Raiders a 5-3 lead, but it was short lived.
