From Massaro:

Dear BRAA Members and Blue Raider Basketball Supporters,

With the conclusion of the 2024-25 college basketball season and the Final Four now behind us, I want to take a moment to update you on the status of our men’s basketball program and Coach Nick McDevitt.

One year ago, we addressed this group with a letter that candidly acknowledged our disappointment in the 2023-24 season. At that time, we also expressed our continued confidence in Coach McDevitt, his staff, and their vision for the program.

This past season, we saw tangible progress. While we came up just short of reaching the NCAA Tournament, we earned a berth in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT)—only the fifth in school history. This was a result of holding the highest computer ranking among non-NCAA qualifying teams in Conference USA, which was ranked among the top 10 leagues nationally. In short, we had a strong season in a highly competitive conference.

We were proud to host Chattanooga in the first round of the NIT, and although we fell in a heartbreaking triple-overtime battle, UTC went on to win the tournament—underscoring the caliber of competition we faced.

In recognition of the progress made and our confidence in the direction of the program, I’m pleased to share that Coach McDevitt has signed a three-year contract extension, securing his leadership through the 2027-28 season. We believe in the momentum we’re building and in Coach McDevitt’s ability to guide us to greater heights.

As we look ahead, we are more determined than ever to return to the NCAA Tournament. Conference USA continues to be one of the nation’s most balanced and competitive leagues, and your ongoing support is vital to our success.

Coach McDevitt, his staff, and their families have worked tirelessly to elevate Blue Raider basketball, and I ask that you continue standing with them as we push forward.

Thank you for all you do for MTSU. Your support truly makes a difference.

Go Blue Raiders!

You already know. This is an albatross of a leadership. There’s no accountability anywhere. Everyone does just enough to get by and the superiors, bosses, and managers applaud it. And 3 mores of this? Seriously WTF??

I think this is the final nail for me. Someone let me know when these clowns are gone and we have real leadership.

It is honestly shocking. I mean, maybe in two years we’ll be winning 25+ per year, but I really don’t see that happening. I’ll be continuing with my targeted donation to one specific sport and one sport only (not MBB).

Exactly what I expect from this gang of swindlers. The athletic department is intentionally wasting away.

They really didn't learn their lesson with Stockstill did they ? Does Massaro realize how pathetic he sounds talking about a watered down NIT bid and losing in the first round to the eventual champion ? That is some serious copium and efficient use of self defense mechanisms (rationalization, anyone?). The NIT was basically a slightly better CBI/CIT this year.....

What are they going to say after next season when we win 15ish games because all our good senior players left and we replaced them with marginal talent ?

There is virtually no chance McDevitt can bring in another mercenary squad as talented as last years, and even if he did, they didn't win anything anyway. That was McDevitt's best shot and it wasn't good enough to even make the championship game.....

It really is unfortunate. I try to keep telling myself that I should, in theory, be able to outlive Massaro, McPhee, and Steve Smith (god willing) and just hope the fresh blood that eventually replaces them is competent. But then I think about how sad and pathetic that is....Why does this have to be happening at my alma mater ? Why can't we just have a normal functioning G5 athletic department ?

Anyway. For now, ya'll know what to do. Hurt them the only way we as fans can. Withhold every penny.

I am not surprised nor does it upset me anymore. If they schedule a game or somehow perform at a level that piques my interest, I’ll drop $15 to be entertained and make the drive over.

I simply do not give a XXXX about school spirit or loyalty.

And……..It also doesn’t surprise me that the two Kings made their Jack throw this grenade and run, 3 weeks after the regular season ended.

I’m not a fan of the decision but I knew it was going to happen a while ago. Chris put himself in a lose lose situation by allowing Nick another season after the 14-19 season in 23/24. He gave Nick a chance to save his job and that’s what Nick did.

There’s not many case studies on universities firing a coach after one of the better seasons the program has had historically and hiring a quality replacement. It’s only the 16th time that MT has had a 20+ win season at the D1 level. It would scare away a lot of potential coaches if Nick were let go. Chris missed his chance to fire him so he had to keep him. Hopefully there is a friendly buyout incase this doesn’t go well.

Whatever you think of Nick McDevitt, there certainly was a noticeable step forward this past season and I do want to start with that. However, there was still certainly evident flaws in roster construction several years into his tenure and I still need to see win the major games, whether that is in regular season, conference tournament, or other postseason events.

The biggest thing I took away was the settling for the lack of postseason success because they competed with the eventual NIT champs. Is that the standard being set? There's a lot of work to be done with this roster with that core of the past several years leaving now, and like I mentioned, I still have questions about his ability to build a roster than can win big games.

I'm not saying he should have been fired or anything like that, but keeping it this quiet in this era of the portal, even if you take out the aspect of the fans/media wanting clarity, is alarming. My question in terms of on the court right now is: Was last year the peak of what this program can be under McDevitt? It seems like they are alright with losing in the first round of the NIT right now. One could say momentum was built within the program, and while that may be true, which of those players will be here to build on said momentum?

Just an odd case all around especially in this era of collegiate athletics.

What was the estimated NIL investment per player last year? $30k possibly?
If so it's hard to imagine someone ponying up that kind of cash again after a first round loss in a non NCAA Tournament game this year.
Don't think I'm going out on a ledge predicting a sub 20 game victory season next year.

I expected an extension. As ewglenn said, hard to fire after a 22 win season.

But it is the secrecy that gets me. And the fact it is 3yrs. Waiting till after the championship to announce is not a reason to wait. And he doesn't need 3yrs now with the rebuild every year portal life we are in now.

I'd have moved on a few years ago, but adding three more years is just insulting. I'd bet his buyout is at least 75% of what is due, which means if he stayed at $575k + $175k for media (and I'd lay money it is more), if he craps the bed next year the buyout is over $1m. Ridiculous.

The “doubling down” with this decision just illustrates how the people running the program think. It’s nothing more than Stockstill’s deal all over again. Yet they expect the “fanbase”, (or whatever’s left of it), to just throw money at them and continue to show up win or lose. How’s that been working for them? Good luck.

Y'all. Please stop saying Stockstill because Stockstill delivered way more than McDevitt has EVER delivered. How many P4 teams has CNM beaten? NONE. He's had 2 winning seasons in 7 years. Stock had WAY MORE winning seasons. Stock at least beat a ranked team once, not CNM. Stock won some bowl games. CNM hasn't won in the real postseason nor even been in it except the NIT game. Nowhere near the NCAA.

To be honest, I don't even think Mason will surpass Stockstill at this point. He couldn't win more than 2 games in a terrible CUSA conference last year. I know that's the punching bag and I was there swinging on it too but Stock may look like our biggest success with this dumba$$ admin we have.

BTW, We all knew this was gonna go down.

Just about everything you said here is not only false it almost sounds like it came from Chris directly. Every bit of that is excuse making. It certainly is not winning philosophically (which is why virtually none of the premier sports are winning championships). The losing mentality and culture is baked in.

What specifically did I say that you think is false? I already said it’s not the decision I would make. I’m just pointing out why they made the decision.

At no other school would the outcome of this season saved his job - if it were actually ever in danger in the first place. You are correct that he shouldn’t have retained him last year but you’re trying to rationalize a decision that is completely irrational. What has Nick actually achieved to earn three more years? It’s just so preposterous. Lastly, there are a long list of coaches who have been fired for having what is arguably decent seasons when it’s clear the trajectory of the program appears to have no basis for a credible future. But the bottom line is the fact that the argument is having to be concocted at all to try to support it is itself illustrative of why this is all ridiculously absurd. A more difficult find would be to identify or locate a coach who has over 100 losses less than 100 wins this deep into a tenure and be given a three-year contract extension. I bet you’ll have a harder time locating that.

A lot of this comes down to one thing :

What do you see as the "floor" (minimum expectation) vs "ceiling" (the great years you remember decades later)?

MT is 7 years into the McD experiment, with McD's best roster, MT MBB only goes 22-12 with a 1st round exit in the NIT. If that's the best he can do, that's McD's ceiling.

You don't extend someone when their ceiling is 22-12. You extend someone when their floor is 22-12 & their ceiling is 25-5

CKD raised the floor / minimum expectations for the program. And 22-12 ain't it. It's time for Middle to be more than somewhere in the middle.

I am at the point I just no longer give F.

I have a guy I used to fly with, and he was a BRAA member and fundraiser for years. He got to the point that he only goes to the tailgates to hang and drink with friends but stopped actually going into the games. He, like many of us, has had enough.

As much as I love baseball, I only go on Tuesday's and a Friday if it's a midafternoon game, but even that is getting tough to stomach with the mediocrity. Hard to justify going over on a Friday night and pay $10-$15 to watch the BS play the probability of getting past the 7th inning is 50/50.

Back to basketball, I just don't care. The Murphy Center is a dump and if the administration doesn't care, why should I? Honestly, I don't see why the TSSAA still holds tournaments there, other than location. McD should've been gone years ago. I just don't feel like waiting for as long as they did with Kermit, to find success to just, maybe, move on only to revert back to the first 3/4 of your tenure here and get fired. Honestly, Kermit should've been fired before finding his lightning in a bottle. He didn't hit 20 Wins until year 10, 1st NCAA tournament was year 11. I recognize the last of it was some of the best, but they were OK with a decade of mediocrity.

never realized the lack of 20 win seasons in the history of the program.. Nick has 2, Kermit 6 and Bruce 4. ... stunning

Again, I don’t disagree with you. If I were the AD he would have been fired last year (realistically I would have done it sooner but last year was an easy out).

However, I challenge you to find a coach that was let go after having a season where they went to the 14th NCAA sanctioned postseason bid in 73 seasons. This year should be the floor of what is acceptable here and I also think Nick isn’t the guy to get us back to the NCAA tournament.

I’m a sales guy, so good luck selling a top up and coming coach to come to MTSU after an NIT bid wasn’t good enough. It’s not like we’re historically a powerhouse MBB program (probably a tough pill for some of yall to swallow). They caught lightening in a bottle with Kermit but it does show what is possible here.

However, optics are important, and it would be tough to sell a good coach to come here after letting Nick go this year. Last year would have been a different story. Chris’s biggest mistake was allowing Nick to come back this season.

You cannot just look at last season in a vacuum and say the NIT bid wasn't good enough.

The 7 years of mostly trash teams is what wasn't good enough. Big picture > small picture

And we technically wouldn't have even fired him, his contract would have just run out.

Any reasonable prospective coach could have looked at the big picture and understood why McDevitt wasn't renewed. Notice how I said wasn't renewed and didn't say he was fired.

Furthermore, any good salesman is going to point to the time we gave Kermit. And to be honest, a good salesman is also going to point to the time we gave McDevitt. McDevitt didn't even deserve 7 years and he got that....

This admin is just a bunch of cowards and terrified to admit they were wrong. McPhee's ego is bigger than his 7 wood and I cannot f'ing wait until that POS is gone

Cannot agree more. I just hope they get people in here who have a clue.

I just think it's a ridiculous argument because almost no one else would let it get to this point, because the coaches would already be removed before a chance like this arrived. Wiley's next post to yours recaps this perfectly in that it's about the actual state of the program not one season here or there. Just like the coach at Fordham, for example. 25-8 in the first season. Two losing seasons and gone. That's a program that's actually setting a standard. Or the guy at Iona. Just two years of .500 basketball and the guy is gone. That's a program that has a standard and culture for winning. Villanova had a 20 win season this year and the head coach in three years didn't have a losing one but they still fired him. That's a program that has a standard and culture for winning. I could do this all day, but to answer your question...

1. Stan Heath was fired in 2007 at Arkansas with a 20+ win season in spite of making the NCAA Tournament.
2. Matt Brady had a far more successful stint at James Madison than McDevitt that included several conference championships and was fired in 2016 after 21-win season because of declining attendance.
3. Dan Monson might be the closest I can find to our situation and it's not pretty. He spent 17 years at Long Beach where he had some success early, not much in the middle, and then some success late. He finally got fired in the year he took LB to the NCAA Tournament with a 20+ win season. Like it's probably going to be with us it took a new athletic director to come in an ddo it. He should have been fired around 2016 or 2017 but definitely four years ago. And while he was given a leash like McDevitt and was able to get them to the NCAA Tourney, this is not the school we want to be emulating. I would rather MT set a model to be more like Utah State and then if you achieve that then you can shoot for something bigger. But right now we're not striving to be anything.

If you want more examples, you're going to have to go find them yourself because the amount F's I have left to give to this program is all out. The bottom line is just every other school is able to see a bigger picture except this one and not getting yourself into this position is a great first step. But if you do it's all sunk costs, so get out and start over rather than prolong not only the agony but the inevitible.

Was thinking maybe 2 years with incitive year extension if CUSA Championship is won or NCAA Tourney Bid. Welp I am going to try to look at the bright side of this. We get 2-3 years more of RingALing!

There is a good chance that McDevitt will be our coach for a decade or longer and have an overall losing record. Insane!

Is this still a fan site? Did you guys go to MTSU? How on earth can there possibly be so many complaints. Coach McDevitt did a good job this year and took a major step forward. How can anyone argue that this didn't merit a contract extension?

I think part of it comes down to the feeling among the administration that we are never realistically going to be a "best of the mid-majors" type of university athletics program year in and year out. In their mind, continuing with a coach who finally got over a hump to get a nice 22 win season in the books is much better than taking a risk of hiring someone where you reset the clock and have a potentially 7 or 10 win season. But I think that says more about their ability to choose good leaders than it does the university and its athletics program.

Touche, that was a good post. Like I said before, if I were the AD, he would have been gone a long time ago. I wish we had someone like the AD at JMU with Matt Brady.

"We are grateful to Matt Brady and his staff for their commitment to our program over the last eight years," JMU athletic director Jeff Bourne said in a statement. "He helped us to recover from a long period of drought for JMU men's basketball and had multiple accomplishments.

"That said, when I met with Matt, we agreed that it was time for both parties to move in a different direction. We hold our coaches to high standards of success both on and off the court. Success is ultimately judged by postseason performance, and we have not advanced past the CAA quarterfinals in seven of eight years. Despite winning records on the court, home attendance has declined."

I might actually have a heart attack if someone at MT said that. That’s why JMU is where they are today.

I'm gonna bookmark this. If I'm wrong, I'll admit it. But I'd wager over these new three years McD will finish them at best .500. Heck, at .500 total. It wasn't a step forward. It was the 2nd beat year in 7 years of evidence. There shouldn't be a "step forward" in year 7. He should already be there.

Just like football, I demand more than .500. I demand more than 22 wins and a 1st round NIT. I demand championships. Our admin has proven time and time again now they do not.

I did graduate from MT, my late wife graduated from MT, I have a daughter going to MT now. I donated to BRAA for over 20 years and owned season tickets. That give me the right to say whatever the F*** I want.

Same for every other person on this thread. It's MTSU for lord's sake, you think a graduate of another university would sign on for this shit show of an athletic department?

Stock was a failure, McD is a failure, baseball sucks... Kiss my ever loving arse. I'll be damn if I give another dime to this poop show of an athletic department who accepts mediocrity as success. McPhee and Massaro are failures of epic proportions, which is why I could not mention them in same sentence as the previous losers.

We are nothing more than a school for women's athletics. Might as well change name to Middle Tennessee State University for Women....

I don't give a damn that we lost to the eventual NIT champion. There are no points for last place...

If I did my job flying planes in combat as poorly as our administration, me and many other would be dead, or fired for incompetence.

At the end of the day, this is the problem around this university and whether trolling or not exemplifies an actual true cultural phenomenon that occurs here like I've never seen. You actually have what's probably a boisterous minority within the inner circle of long time MT alums who are either a) satisfied with the state of affairs; b) thinks we're doing well and too dumb understand otherwise; or c) knows we're getting bent over but they have a certain level of status and access from which they directly benefit and for that reason they use that clout to help maintain the status quo even thought it's killing the vine of the Univ at the root. little middle wasn't created overnight. It's been groomed. The person referenced in "c" doesn't care about the program out of selfishness but it most certainly exists here. And it's flippin crazy. MT needs it own version of DJT and Elon.
