Per Borthick, Alabama backup TE Corey McCaron will transfer to MT. If admitted into the graduate program, he would be eligible this year. Will be very interesting to see if its a walk-on or scholarship and what kind of impact he will be able to make.

Interesting to note that AJ and Logan Kilgore are pretty good friends (I think Logan was in his wedding?) Gotta think those connections came into play here.

If he is better than the other 5 or so TEs we already have, then great. If so, do we really need another TE? I feel like we already have too many as little as we use the TE, though we did throw to them a little bit last year. Should get a little pub from the name.

Gotta wonder if this is true since I've seen nothing elsewhere. Anyone have anything else? If true, this adds another human interest story to the game along with our QB being from Tuscaloosa.

Two questions: Just how good was McCarron in his "backup" role?

And I don't recall any (Graduate going to grad school with 1 yr to play) transfers from "power" to "%#&-major" programs. Can anyone provide examples of where this was a positive for both the athlete and the FB program (I realize there are many from "power" to "power" or "%$&-major to "power" which worked out - this situation not so much).

Well we picked up whats his name from Ole Miss in a position that we are loaded at and I heard no complaints. He can only play one year and he sits out this year. He was also a backup.

We have numbers at TE but are they really talented? I don't know. I do know that Alabama has a TE that is pre-season 2nd or 3rd team SEC rated by Phil Steele? I like this transfer better than the Ole Miss transfer because he could come in and start THIS year and it is only for one year. This would give our young tight ends another year to grow in strength.

Didn't we only have McGlover for one year?

If you are thinking Chris McClover (the WR), he was here for two years at least, but IIRC, he really only made an impact 1 year (2009 NOLA Bowl 10-3 season in which he took a screen ~30 yards for a TD in the 2nd half)

ESPN only shows 1 catch for 3 yards in his player profile, so it looks as if his impact, even in a backup role was minimal.

I'm actually surprised that Alabama did not put stipulations on Corey's transfer, as is often the case. It is quite common for teams to put stipulations on a transfer request (not allowed to transfer in state, in conference, or to a opponent on the upcoming schedule, etc). This may be an indicator of the impact, or lack thereof, that Corey made while at Alabama.

We will see. I have a feeling MT will be in more 11 and 12 personnel sets this season

McClover was 6'5" and Franklin made him a beast. Eldred King had a great first year in 08 but then he beat up his girlfriend which opened the door for McClover.

This kid is a good get because he knows the playbook and that a backup TE for a national champion caliber team is better than most kids we could ever bring in here. He's transferring to get some PT and we should be able to give it to him. He can probably block which is even better.

He would play right away under the graduate transfer rules. Also, I believe he transferred to Alabama from USA, so he was D1 talent through and through.

Keep in mind, Max Linder was moved to FB (a move I hate btw) so it makes sense if they bring him in for a year..

I'll only believe we'll actually use the TE when I see him catching passes on the field.

Otherwise, I'm forced to still believe that Stock thinks that the only tight ends in the stadium are over with the cheerleaders.

Keep in mind that FB and TE are often more of "constraint" player and blockers than impact players in the Air Raid offense installed by Faulkner (at least I'm assuming he has continued in the Air Raid traditions in which he was trained).

Based on what I have seen Buster plans on throwing to the TE. You don't move Perkins over there if that is not the plan.
Yes and No. The "Y" WR in the Air Raid is typically a bigger body at WR. If you think back to 2009, the Y WR were Gene Delle Donne and Shane Blissard IIRC and it's not uncommon to use a 2 TE set in the Air Raid (Franklin had the T-Bone at La Tech, Leach has a similar formation at Wazzou), nor is it uncommon to have 2 backs and TE (WVU)

During the spring game Perkins was strictly used as a TE. I get the feeling we will see less of the 4 wr sets. I just don't believe we have the personnel to be two deep at wr from a 4 wr set perspective.

With the exception of 2009, MT has not gone 4 wide a majority of the time. It's quite possible that the Raiders could sport this formation in 2015

X---------LT-LG-C-RG-RT-----------Y----------
-----------------------------H--------------------Z--
--------------------Q--T-----------------------------

X - WR
Z- WR
Y - Perkins (split out)
H - McCarron (and other TE lined up as a H-Back) (H is typically a shiftier WR but I'm not sure what letter the Air Raid coaches use for the 2nd TE)

Though MT is lined up as a 3 WR set in the above formation, personnel wise, it is a 2 TE set and would be treated as such by defenses. This could, POTENTIALLY, put Perkins up against a LB or S instead of a CB #mismatch

It may also be beneficial to use the Duo package some as well, thus placing the run strength to the opposite of the pass strength and really messing with the defensive alignments
