I'm a big believer of comparing ourselves to our peers.
The dream of a truly competitive playing field is never going to happen, the big programs just won't let it. There's no sense in comparing us to schools/programs with the resources of the big dogs, and probably not even the Memphis's and even someone like South Florida. At the end of the day, the $$$'s just aren't there.
But we're far better funded than Southern Miss. Those guys are the opportunities we need to look at and ask hard questions. There will always be ups and downs, good coaches and bad coaches hired, and sports are hard so you can make a good decision and it not work out.
But over the long term, we should be competitive in the big 4 sports (FB, BB, WBB, and Baseball) with schools like So.Miss. There's no reason for our Baseball team to have been as non-competitive as it has been. Tennessee's a great baseball state, with plenty of talent to sustain two title-winners and a host of other contending programs.
Leadership needs to look at that program and ask are we really getting what we're paying for with our $$$'s.
