Facilities Mega Thread

Was in the mid 90's Dr Walker felt MT needed a new mascot/logo to bring us into the 21st century. He proposed a committee of involved students to bring about change for a new future school mascot.
He was a great proponent for Middle Tennessee, but not sure if the committee understood exactly what we needed or what he wanted.
Boots had it right all along. Simplicity is best. Wish he had just stuck with his traditional tiered MT helmet logo for everything.
The field with slanted MT centered within the state monogram would have been perfect. Also IMO probably drop the I am True Blue Blue from the sideline. No need for too much graphics.
Always go with the moniker a professor at MT taught me years ago. He said when all else fails to remember the motto "KISS". Keep It Simple Stupid.

I work for Shaw. Not on the turf side of things but excited we won the bid to do our field.

Very cool

Is it a premium product? How often do these newer surfaces have to be replaced?

I’m no expert but I do know this should be a significant upgrade. Life should be in the neighborhood of 10 years.

10 years doesn't seem like long at all...

what is it $2 million for the field? So 200k per year?

We were talking about this last week for the local high school. I thought it was more like 1 and a quarter mil.
The guy was also saying it has to be 'concussion tested' before each different season. Although I would assume
this field is never used for things like soccer(?).

Based on a google search, cost of a Shaw Sports Turf cost $550k-~$1.5 million or so.

My guess is the final cost depends on which turf, how "fancy" it is, etc.

My understanding is that one of the reasons the local (Boro) HS went to turf is so they could use it for soccer (and other events) without damaging the field.

Also, for a little more insight, 10 years is usually the minimum. I’ve seen them go up to 15 years.

If you haven't listed to Sam's podcasts with Nathan and Larry, you should. Sheds a huge light on what Larry did and that Nathan is now taking on. And Nathan did A LOT himself before. Kudos to him in his new expanded role.

Running errands today & drove down Greenland. From street view the facility is really taking shape. Any recent exterior pictures available from that angle?

Anyone know how we are looking from a money standpoint to start the Murphy Center reno?
I don't know the exact price, but I'm not sure they know either. IIRC, Lee said something about this during the BlueRaiderPod a few weeks ago. Working on getting some more drawings, prices, etc right now & then they can determine what they can do.

It should also be noted that they don't HAVE to do all of it at once. It's possible they divide Phase 2 of Build Blue Now into smaller projects. IMO, one of the priorities needs to be building the suites & finding creative ways to increase revenue with better seats & amenities.

I did notice when leaving that it looks so dark from the outside. I understand the glass and such, I was thinking a big MT sign that light up on the sides that actually face public streets.

While I get the funding part taking a while, final plans, permits, etc...
At this rate, my 4th grader will graduate high school before we get the IPF.

A question I have is, do we really even "need: an IPF in todays landscape? I think facilities may have taken a back seat to NIL money now. Sure, its nice to have both but for programs like our have to prioritize our limited resources. If we were located further north i think it would be more important but being down south I think its less of an issue. Also, if we are going to spend money on facilities I think it should be prioritized toward facilities that the fans interact with, like the Murphy Center renovation. Most fans will never interact with an IPF. We need to be increasing fan experience to get more butts in the seats. Just my humble opinion.

I agree completely.

My understanding, which absolutely could be wrong, is that the indoor track that is being taken out of MC and some seating could be part of it. So used by more than just football. Could be used even for baseball and soccer as well.

If it is only football, then your point is totally valid on revenue sharing, unless a donor steps up for it specifically. (I so need to win the lottery)

I thought the last time we saw the IPF the track wasnt going in there? It definitely needs to. if we are waiting that long, make it amazing and not just a building with a roof.

I honestly think we should do a covered facility like UAB and save the money. Would it be nice to have a fully enclosed facility? Yes, but I don’t think we really need it.

Yes, you need IPF. Makes conditioning / practice easier & more consistent in unpredictable weather.

Also can be used by multiple teams. Not sure if a IPF like Montana's facility would work (~$10 million, IIRC) or Troy's new $11 million facility. MTSU needs one.

IMO, MT and city / county need to work together to fully fund Murphy Center renovations. Take out a bond and pay it back using hotel tax. And honestly, an argument CAN be made to do the same to build IPF and help fund additional Floyd renovations as a Build Blue Now Phase 4 (not saying there is a Phase 4).
