There's only about 30 5-star players in each class. Every year the NFL drafts over 200 players I to the league. By necessity a lot of those players will be guys that were not ratedas high in high school but developed well in college.

How many kids play high school football in a given Sr class in this country - I googled it and the best I could come up with is about 300-400k.

Of which they've identified maybe 400 of those and given them 5-4-3-star rankings.

Then, of those 400, they've picked 28 guys out of a possible 41 (I removed the kickers and the old guys that didn't have ratings) that are playing in the Superbowl. That's pretty good.

There's two false pretenses at work here:

1. That a 3-star guy is somehow lowly rated. This is simply not the case. A 3 star guy is still likely rated one of the nations top 300 players. That's pretty good.

2. That, 5-star vs. 3-star can predict success on a recruit by recruit basis. It simply can't. It never has. It doesn't and never can take into account academics, injury, effort, systems, etc, etc.

However, a class full of 5-stars is going to, virtually without fail, outperform a class full of 3-stars. A class full of 3-stars is going to, usually, outperform a class full of 2-star guys.

Look no further than the standings and rankings.

Winning football programs are built on signing days. That's why recruiting is so important.
