BASKETBALL Coach McDevitt

I have heard that Nick did get extended. Also given it’s been 11 days since the season ended and there has been no announcement on the matter, not to mention a few portal kids have listed MT as interested, I think it’s pretty safe to confirm it as fact.

Some of the details I’ve heard are foggy so don’t want to share those yet. Mainly I have no idea when the extension was offered, which i do think is context that matters here. I plan to submit an FOIA next week. Appreciate everyone’s patience.

This is not ok. This is why they lost me. It is complete and utter dereliction of duty as government entity that the person who is probably the second highest paid person on campus that they hide his employment status. There is not one single excuse or rationale for why this is acceptable. I would rather give a San Francisco drug addict a needle than give these people anymore money. It’s time for a complete house cleaning starting with Steve Smith and everyone down the line until you get to the admin staff.

An important question you should be asking yourself if you’re giving more than four cents to this regime is why am I giving to this incompetence and condoning this behavior?

And by the way the answer is simple. They hide it because they know it’s f’d up and wrong. Yet they still do it. I’m sorry maybe not sorry if this offends you but my view on this and message to the university cronies is pretty clear. Like Cinderella said I’m not your fool, nobody’s fool.

insane

just insane

and then they probably sit around and wonder why the stands are empty.....

LOL. Cannot even begin to put into words how out of touch they are. I'm literally beginning to feel sorry for dumb & dumber, but then I remember how much $ they've stolen from our university and how fat those retirement checks are going to be....

Truly criminal situation. Local reporter looking to make a name for himself could do so by shining some light on the incompetence and deceit that's been going on. I'm just not sure anyone would care though, it is MTSU afterall.

I don’t give a shit.
If there happens to be a game (Football or Basketball) that I deem worthy of my $15 and gas to Murfreesboro then I’ll show up.
That’s about it.
Thats exactly where I am now. And not encouraged about that ending anytime soon. They want to beg and plead for $$$ in this Build Better Blue but its the same people who screwed everything up for over 10 years making the decisions on that.

You nailed it! If they knew the fan base would be excited they would have it out everywhere. Instead, they know the majority of us will be pissed. Now, I’m just counting the falling tears that fall before my eyes.

Absolutely no reason to hide it and keep it secret unless you are afraid to reveal the details. These dudes are morons. They keeping shocking me when I shouldn't be shocked at all. Extended him doesn't bother me since he won 20+ games with an NIT appearance. Not many coaches get fired especially when it's the probably the best seaaon he's had here.

However, it's the cover up and lack of details. What's the extension? How long? Bump in pay? That's the BS that pisses us off. If it isn't insane, they would have posted it.

Huh?

In the forest but still think it’s a bunch of trees I see. Unreal.
Ha, you really love that analogy don’t you. I will continue to support my team, my university and whoever the coach might be. Sorry if that offends some of you “fans” but I won’t complain at all about the season we just had.

It seems to fit. So impressed by this mercenary season (which still didn’t produce anything of significance) you could care less about the bigger picture and actual state of the program or even more importantly the state of the entire athletics? The bar really is high here. Thanks for educating me on what a “real fan” is.

You’re free to waste your money giving it to this incompetent leadership so go crazy.

Hypothetical for the board:
If the Murphy Center renovation budget doubled and was fully funded and would be complete in the next two seasons AND we were going to be at the top of the league in basketball NIL/rev sharing money next year, what would your current opinion of the program be?
Would you have a more favorable view?
Just a thought experiment

Of the program overall ? Yes.

McDevitt ? No.

I do not believe (and adamantly so) that McDevitt has the coaching chops to return us to being a conference juggernaut. He is a good recruiter and a decent coach....and that's exactly what I don't want for our program.

We just went through two decades of hell with the most mediocre football coach in history. And we did so because he periodically had great results but never won anything meaningful and could never elevate the program to the top of the conference. And by the top I mean #1 and championships. That is the goal after all right ?

Sound familiar ?

I’ve heard the rumor over a year ago about possible new blood angel money on the way but I haven’t seen any evidence yet that it will happen. I’ll believe it when (or if) it ever happens

It's not even that all of that matters with regards to McD. I mean it absolutely does, NIL especially. But what we are asking for in basketball, it isn't like it can't be done here.

For the past 20yrs the women have won a conf champ on average every other year. Sure we want more. We want a S16 etc. But there isn't a school in the country that wouldn't kill for that kind of sustained success.

But yet it can't be done on the men's side? I call BS. We just need the right coach.
A 22 win season and NIT bid is great. But it isn't a conference championship, even a regular season one. And one NIT bid in 7yrs doesn't cut it.

A few thoughts :

1) I get why he was retained. It's really hard to let a coach with a 20 win season and NIT bid walk.
2) Many - if not most of you - have expressed the same frustrations I have with MT MBB. 20-10(ish) seasons need to be the floor, not the ceiling for MT MBB. It needs to be the expectation, not a reason for a commendation.
3) If McD can't seal the deal in his 7th year with arguably the best roster he's had, can he get the job done & get into NCAA in year 8 / 9 / 10? Has MT hamstrung themselves to a
4) If McD was extended (and I think the reports are true), why wasn't / hasn't it been announced? Why are extensions of coaches treated a Cold War nuclear secrets? If you are excited enough about a coach to extend him, let the world know.

The common denominator in almost ALL of this is McPhee. He's an academic who doesn't really understand the WHY behind outreach / athletics.

The Murphy Center could be so nice. I know we don't have Notre Dame money, but Murphy's sister arena, Purcell Arena at Notre Dame is a good example of what Murphy could be.

I've always heard nothing can be done without the track moving. A lot of moving parts in the way of anything ever happening. I share the sentiment that nothing will happen anytime soon.

Which is nothing but cop outs, excuses, and taking the path of least resistance. And I would argue none of those traits are traits of a winner. They are a loser's mentality.

There are a litany of examples of coaches getting fired in spite of a winning season when it was clear that things still were not moving in the right direction and the program had no tail wind for being a "winning program."

So, you may be able to get why, but for me this isn't even about "getting" this one decision, which is actually symptomatic of a much bigger culture problem. What I get is that mTSU has a loser's mentality with respect to this university as a whole to include its athletics. We have perpetually let the two most visible and important programs on the campus languish in mediocrity at best. And it's all because of one reason. There is no accountability anywhere from top to bottom. I've never seen an entity this massive operate for decades at a time without any accountability. It literally blows my mind.

And there are multiple common denominators starting with the Chair of the Board who exerted immense influence even before coming the Chair. It starts there then to McPhee and all the way down. This university operates more like a third world oligarchy.

The Murphy Center is in need of renovation whether our BB is good or bad. The whole place is a dump. Whoever is responsible for its upkeep should be fired.
Not kidding.

I went to the Upperman vs Tullahoma high school championship game little over a week ago and everywhere I walked, it was super sticky. I get drinks get spilled, but not over the entire seating area. The seat was in in Section P was the most uncomfortable seat. It felt like the cushion was one of the original ones.

I went to the same restroom I used for the Lady Raiders vs NMSU and the same damn faucet was still running when washing hands and it was empty when I went in.

Not MC related, but the steps leading from the MC to the stadium is rusty. Amazing what some paint could do. I just feel there are so many small things the school could do to help.

The MC and Floyd could use a lot of TLC. Paint, cleaning, and pressure washing would go a long way. Have the student athletes do it as part of their community service.

I wish we could do brick in and around Floyd. It would drastically change the stadium and I can’t imagine it would be a ton of money. Maybe the concrete school could come up with something to do and have the students run it. We need to look at cheap things we can do to make an impact. We’ve got the talent on campus to do a lot of this.

I’d also like to see more plants around the athletic facilities. Hedges inside the stadium would look awesome and feels more southern. I think the entire campus could benefit from better landscaping.

Exactly... Not everything has to cost a fortune. Plus, be some resume material for all the students that had a hand in these projects.

Brick at Floyd would look awesome. I think more signage, like Middle Tennessee spelled out on MC and at the top of the new SAPC with logo beside it.

And that is the exact reason why MC should never get to that point. I'm not talking about removing the track, or club seating, etc. But general maintenance and upkeep, that usually includes a few low cost upgrades every few years.

MC is a huge welcome sign to people who have never been to campus. College and high school graduations. TSSAA tourney. Concerts. The list goes on.
Floyd is the same way as said. The stairs against Reese needed painted last time I was there. They still do Drum Corps Intl, right? Another welcome sign to campus.

Being the geographical center we should host every living thing under the sun and be the crown jewel of the mid-state.

7 woods finger prints all over it. He's as stubborn as they come. Firing McDevitt would be admitting he is wrong. Deep down he knows he is. Especially when you see the success Odom has had and knew he could have been ours if 7 wood didn't cheap out on the smooth talking McDevitt.

But firing McDevitt would require 7 wood to swallow and check his ego...which he can't do. He's a weak, pathetic, simpleton of a "man."

Only one recourse left for us as fans to do. Absolutely starve them of any funding.

I disagree with their rationale for keeping CNM assuming they have quietly extended him again. His overall record at MTSU is terrible.
Josh Pastner had 5 straight 24+ win seasons and 2 CUSA Titles at Memphis. But after two bad seasons of 18 and 19 wins he was “encouraged” to take the Georgia Tech offer and move on. When the fans quit coming, changes have to be made……..except at MTSU.

Agree...

Once you lose the fans, that's it. I don't care how good you do, if no one shows up to watch, then it's a lost cause. See Stockstill and the year they played in the CUSA title game. He had already lost the fan base and was a sinking ship. He should've been fired years ago.

McD is for sure staying. They had an instagram post today about his upcoming basketball camp. And I will no longer be donating time or money. I’ll go back to rooting for Ole Miss like I did as a kid. That’s where my mom went.
I'd say you are right if they are advertising the summer camps.

I just wish they had the sack to say this is what we're doing and here is why.

That's why I would make the change. Or, at the very least, give him a heads up that it would be wise to "explore other options" & that would would waive buyout.

That's what's so mind-boggling about MT decision making

When they hired McD...you're coming off one of the best runs in school history & hire a coach who is a 20-10 coach. That's not gonna satisfy fans after CKD's run.

I’m betting there were no other options. No one is hiring a CUSA coach with a losing record. Therefore, another year at good ole Middle.

Some still haven't figured this out yet. They know unequivocally beyond any shadow of a doubt that they know more than we do. They've expressed this numerous times before that the fans, alumni, etc., just don't get it and that the fans are actually the problem.

Well, good news for them since I took my problem making self out of the picture and contributions along with it.

If it is true that the track is holding up the renovation of the Murphy Center that tells you all you need to know about the administration. Why in the hell would you let a sport like track hold up desperately needed renovations for the men and women's basketball. You know sports that actually make money and have fans. Improvements that would help recruiting, improve fan experience, and generally look better for visitors. It's worth shutting down the whole track and field program if need be to get these renovations. Every time I see those ugly bleachers in TV I want to throw up. It's criminal the Murphy Center is in such sorry shape.
