BASKETBALL Coach McDevitt

As a track and field alum, I know where you’re coming from. That being said, our basketball program does not make money, it actually cost our athletic department quite a bit to keep them up. I know we could probably make a few extra dollars selling sweets potentially but we certainly don’t have the fans right now to fill up anything more than the lower bowl
I'd be all for removing the bleachers now and then pause renovations till we ready.

I actually think that’s a pretty good idea. I also don’t think the track is what is holding up the deal, I think it’s more about money. The track was only ever an issue when they ripped up our track around the football stadium. We did need at least one track back then, but that is clearly not an issue now. I’ll never forget my freshman year when I came to Murfreesboro Lee Fowler sat us down and told us that we would not have a track all four years. I was going to be there. Was very disheartening, but at least we had the indoor track.

Sounds like we were there at the same time, during the reno of Floyd. Did you all use Riverdale or Oakland tracks as home until the new one was built or just on the road every competition?

We did not have home outdoor meats for years, but we had a couple of very important indoor meats. Coach Hayes actually started an indoor meet called the “last chance meet” that was for really good performers that needed to still qualify for the NCAA meet at the end of the year. It’s a very well-known meet around. The country. Coaches was really pretty incredible.

It’s all a self licking pile of poo. There’s a reason why everything sucks and it’s not the indoor track. But certainly serves up another useful appetizer for making excuses. Knoxville showed us in the teens what mismanagement does to an athletics power program. This group is demonstrating it to us for a non-power program.

I truly wish things were different. Because if you think about it we’ve had in small spurts some limited to moderate (WBB) success with a complete albatross of an organization and administration. Just think about what MT could be with competent leadership that valued a culture of excellence and winning instead of one of mediocrity, acceptance, and “just enough’ mentality?

Can't argue that reasoning. Our money is all we have to speak our mind by holding on to it by withholding donations and not going.

I disagree with their rationale for keeping CNM assuming they have quietly extended him again. His overall record at MTSU is terrible.
Josh Pastner had 5 straight 24+ win seasons and 2 CUSA Titles at Memphis. But after two bad seasons of 18 and 19 wins he was “encouraged” to take the Georgia Tech offer and move on. When the fans quit coming, changes have to be made……..except at MTSU.
Yeah. We are just different.

If I were in charge I’d remove the bleachers and redo the concourse. We do not need the the pullout bleachers. I know the excuse is graduation but a lot of universities do that in their football stadiums. If they want to increase the capacity for graduations then build some sort of permanent structure. The track also looks terrible and that should be an easy fix (paint or do an epoxy coating).

Also, why is there so much equipment just sitting out? I noticed it at the basketball games this year. We had tons of workout equipment around the concourse. It looks like a high school gym with that stuff around.

I was genuinely embarrassed when I brought friends to the game. I tell my team at work that what we allow is the standard. If that’s the standard at MT we’ve got a LONG way to go. The entire place needs to have someone do 5S on it. A deep clean, and reorganizing the place, is desperately needed.

So apparently it's me and my choice in schools that don't announce. Again, found out via FOIA request.

What is the deal with schools doing this crap!?! I mean Kellogg is 50-16 so no one is fussing. That is different for sure. But not announcing stuff is just such a bad bad bad look for me.

Is this becoming the norm? Sheesh I hope not.

I saw the equipment laying around the two times I stepped in Murphy Center. When leaving the high school tournament, I was going down the stairs that lead toward the tennis courts and spot for new hotel and there were so many cracks and chipped concrete, I actually slipped on some twice, thankfully I was holding on to the handrail. That is safety stuff that could lead to a lawsuit.

I am all for removing the bleachers now. Worse case, add a few extra ceremony's or move to stadium. To be honest, I went to one of their graduations in May '24 and there was plenty of room in the lower level with very few using the bleachers.

I often question is maintenance even goes around campus to inspect or waiting for someone to complain.

The equipment is because the Murphy Center is being used as the weight room while the SPAC is being built. They have used it for that for a few years too, but much worse because they have no where to go.

I was embarrassed bringing my father in law to the liberty game. He said how are there so few people here? I thought yall were having a pretty good season? Said it reminded him of his days working at Ball State University; he is a Hoosier Grad. While Ball State is more our peer than IU for sure it hurt to hear.

I know that’s the reason the equipment is out but how difficult is it to put it away for game days? It would take 3-4 guys maybe 15 mins to put it away somewhere. It’s small things like leaving out equipment that fans notice.

I am a firm believer in attention to details. Those are so easy to fix that it makes me wonder if anyone really cares? Maybe I hold myself and all I do to a higher standard. I would be embarrassed if anyone from my company talked about our equipment just laying around and not neat.

I agree. I don't think there is a single person working for MT who takes pride in their work. Perfect example of government employees run amok.
I've said it many times. If this were a private business everyone would be fired and the business shut down.

MT administration just posted in its own fashion about Nick coming back via MT basketball twitter.
"Don't miss your chance to take part in this year's Nick McDevitt basketball camp! June 9th-12th"
That's one way of clarifying the situation.

He's definitely coming back. They would have had to make notable moves already if he was being replaced.

I find myself somewhat surprisingly ambivalent about all of it. I can't imagine any better with the people that got the athletic department and university into the sad shape it currently is, still making personnel decisions. Maybe I'm just getting too old to care about it much anymore.

Getting old certainly isn’t for the faint of heart. One of the positives in this is the fact that me getting older means the 3 stooges are as well and getting closer to future endeavors
Often wonder how Massaro walks in everyday, knowing he is on a month to month, knowing he has done nothing to advance this program, not well liked in the community, and generally being a puppet for McPhee and Smith.Must be a sad and lonely walk into the office every day. Heck, they had to hire 2 guys just to be the face of Build Blue. One is gone, the other is about as well like in the community as Massaro and not done much either. Certainly not lived up to his billing
So, getting old may suck for me, but here’s to hoping it works in the favor of our future.
I’ve said a million times over the years, I hate it for you Alums. Stuck in the Middle.

If you’re referring to Lee being the other you are completely wrong. He is well liked and has done an excellent job.

I'd second that. Lee has been fantastic in my book, and to me personally. He has reached out more than once to talk even though I am a small donor in the grand scheme of things and is always willing to meet me on the rare occasions I make it to a home game. Hans was the same way.

Reminds me of people too lazy to take the shopping cart to the cart wranglers scattered in the parking lot.

If you can't put your damn cart up, what makes me think you willing to do the hard stuff.

If we had a newly renovated Murphy Center, instead of the dump we play in, the basketball program might actually make money. When you walk into there you don't feel like your at a big time event. It feels more like a a run down expo center from the 70s.

Not wrong... All those parents and students from the high school students could not have been too impressed.
