UNIVERSITY NEWS Bill allowing alcohol sales on campus for sporting events fails in state House

The representatives aren't that smart. Do they not know that Titans and Preds sale alcohol. Do they know that Kroger/Publix/Aldi and almost every restaurant sells alcohol. Dangers are everywhere. Just not a lot of depth.

Personally, I don't think they should legislate this stuff but at least come back with something better than this:

As the chamber took up the measure on the floor, Rep. Jason Zachary, R-Knoxville, warned that Marsh’s proposal could lead to additional dangers — including drunk driving.

“We set a very dangerous precedent here,” Zachary said.

Rep. Andy Holt, R-Dresden, who has criticized several bills related to alcohol in the past, said the MTSU proposal would likely lead to other universities and colleges to seeking similar circumstances.

While questioning Marsh, Holt jokingly suggested he would like to amend the measure to allow alcohol sales in high schools.

“Why in one venue would we allow for this controlled, regulated sale of alcohol and in another we would not?” Holt asked, reiterating his opposition to the measure.

Outrageous! Rep. Rudd did not support but he never supports alcohol. Rep. Sparks voted against....Unbelievable. Rep. Matlock voted no and went to MTSU....There are a bunch of representatives that voted for the UTC alcohol and then voted no for MTSU. Makes no sense. You have 10 or so that always vote no on any alcohol. But the ones that voted for UTC and against MTSU is ridiculous! This thing failed by 5 votes. Let your representatives know your feelings!

By the way, if you go the General Assembly vote and use the video, the UTC bill passed with 71 votes last year with NO debate. Our bill got 45 votes and was railed against by Rep. Andy Holt and Rep. Jason Zachary.....Both anti alcohol and UT guys.......But they didn't say a word when the bill to sell at UTC football games at Finely stadium was up last year.

Same with Memphis....I think we positive engagement of several reps that voted no, we can succeed later in the spring or next year.....A core group of 10 so always vote no......But, they didn't rail against the evils of drinking against UTC......No debate on that bill. straight to vote. MTSU needs to lobby and promote this better next time. Over 20 legislators were not even there to vote..So, when you need 51, that's a problem.

MT is absolutely terrible at lobbying, advocating, and/or generally politics of the legislature for the benefit and advancement of the university.
