BASKETBALL Basketball talk

That was a good heads up. His comments on the ruin of community for young people were spot on.

"Radically different team."
"very deep team"
From Andy Herzer after watching scrimmage in the last day or two.

Lest one thinks this is new season rah rah stuff, Herzer is the one saying a .500 team would be very optimistic in CNM first season due to roster just lacking players.

Thanks for the link: I've lost the habit of listening to the podcast of the show but do enjoy when there is primarily MT BkB talk. Appreciate the links when Herzer, McDevitt, or Insell are guests.

In listening to Herzer it appears the lack of perimeter defense which has been pointed out repeatedly by fans on this board (and agreed to by Herzer in this interview) will be solved with the influx of "tougher" players. Additionally it is implied that McDevitt's demeanor has markedly changed with the renovated roster and the excitement is evident.

If looking for a downer it appears that according to Herzer bigs Coleman-Jones and Fussel need development and Schuler needs time to learn (and accept?) the system.

Depending on the strength of the conference, the effects of Covid, and the ability of the players to jell this will be a very interesting year.

I figured that would be the case with Fussell. A little disappointed to hear it from Coleman-Jones. That is a guy that started quite a few games in the B10 as a freshman last year.

I could have heard incorrectly - I only listened once and didn't go back to refresh my old-timers' memory.

It could be that without a scorecard one would get the new players mixed up, and though he knows BkB more than any of us Herzer's opinion is not the end-all be-all. Regardless, we have a deep enough roster to allow players to develop, and some players may surprise once the lights come on and prove to be better game than practice players.

Pending injury or covid issues it is going to be interesting to see the starters and rotation by mid-January with so many new pieces.

Yep, my recollection of his comments were that the 2 new bigs would need some time to develop. Not all that uncommon for young post players, I might add.

Herzer did go on to assert that he thought both of the new young bigs did appear to have the potential to develop into good players, my paraphrase.

Herzer appeared most impressed with Jalen Jordan, the guard transfer from St Francis. He did not describe him as impressive because of tremendous athleticism or strength or any such thing. Instead, he appeared impressed by his moxie, toughness, "grit," and "leadership."

Herzer even compared this new guy to Marcos Knight in what he brought to the team. Herzer described the team as being really responsive to Jordan's leadership.
