Per Twitter....

defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix has interviewed for the Southen Miss head coaching position, according to ESPN's Chris Low.

Apparently, he is a final candidate.

Not so much worried about him leaving as I think our defense last year was pretty bad, but has having to find ANOTHER coach.

I'm a Nix fan personally. His defenses have generally performed above par since arriving. The Illinois and Vanderbilt performances were enough to win the game but offense didn't get the job done. WKU and La Tech were lighting EVERYBODY up and the offense/special teams didn't show up in either of those games too, so I can give a pass there. Alabama game was a wash.

Hate the timing of this.

That would be a monumental mistake and I'm pretty sure Stock knows it. If Nix does in fact leave, the hiring of the DC arguably becomes the most important of Stock's coaching career. With everything we have in place, we cannot afford to hire the wrong guy.

Actually, our defense was way better this year statistically than we were in 2014. We were pretty good in 2012 and 2013. He's not that bad. I'm sorry but look at Manny Diaz. His D didn't bring the house down until 2009. 2006-2008, we lost to ULL, Arky St., and FIU. We never beat Troy. We had Troy beat in 2006 and the D completely buckled. In 4 years with Manny, we won 27 games. With Nix, we've won 29. I would also argue that in 2009, Diaz was the beneficiary of a really good Tony Franklin offense. It did play a part. We can criticize Nix all we want, but I agree with Wiley, our O put our D in some really bad spots. Basically, if our O took better care of the football and scored from the opponent's 1 yard line, we would have won 10 games this year including the bowl game.

You may say "You're crazy". But if you re watch the bowl game, you'll see 3 things.

1. The D got a great pick on WMU's 20 yard line. We get down to the 1 as we have a lot and didn't punch it in and got 0 points. Had we got that, the game is tied late in the 4th and Stock doesn't have to force a throw that caused the pick that sealed it.

2. We were driving with momentum near halftime and Parker loses the football. Had we not done that, we are getting points.

3. Collis TD called back. I thought it was BS but the O had a chance to get a huge score and didn't use complete discipline to ensure the TD.

Do those 3 things on O and we win by 10.

In the VU game, we get to their 1 yard line and we don't punch it in. Do that and we win by 3.

Also, we got to their 25 on a 1st down and turn it over. If we don't do that, we get 3-7 more points. Neither one of those things have to do with the D.

In the Illinois game, our special teams allow a punt block return for a TD and in the 4th Q last drive, we call run plays that chew clock instead of getting us closer or scoring a TD. Either point would have won it. Neither point was on the D.

We win 10 games and no one cares about the D. I'm not defending Nix but we played pretty good at times and the O didn't do their part and Stock knows it. We just did a complete overhaul / upgrade on O and I don't think it was by accident.

Yes, we got gashed by LaTech and WKU but we were on the road and the O stunk in those games by going 3 and out a lot and turning it over a lot too. Bama, hell, we played them better than Michigan State did and just as good as UGA did. Not upset there.

Been pointing it out all year. Our D is performing ok to good. Statistically improved a lot. When you run up tempo and go three and out or turn it over as much as we did you put your defense in bad spots. Our run D was suspect in the bowl game was bad but for the year is much improved. There are some teams that are just going to score a lot like WKU and la tech. If the offense comes out and shows they can keep up the defense feeds off of it and can make plays. If the O has a bunch of TOs and three in outs you get what we had.

I know, I saw what Low tweeted. I'm just saying, I've got some pretty solid sources down in Hattiesburg from my time covering USM recruiting. There might be a straight up revolt if Nix were to get that job.

Their beat writer pretty much shot it down, too. He hadn't been able to confirm he interviewed, either.

They say he dropped out because of the enormous pressure to hire Hopson. This was the 3rd time they interviewed him for the coaching job there. I guess he got sick of the B.S.

I don't think Nix has done a terrible job as DC (actually, he's been good), but I'd prefer a more aggressive DC

They hired an Ole Miss guy. Jay Hopson ran some very good defenses for USM as DC. He turned the program around at Alcorn after he left Memphis.

Great guy, excellent coach, cancer survivor. USM made a good choice

Now that he has an offense that can be trusted to score I think he can afford to be more aggressive. I would bet you see a lot more blitzing and risks this year because of the new OC.

Overall, I like DC NIx. I think he is decent-good. MT could do a lot worse. MT would have to fork out a ton of $ and catch a break to do better. I like Nix's attitude especially. With all that said, there is definitely some room for improvement. IMO, MT had a boatload of talent on defense this past season and MT's defense seemed to be decent. A little underperforming IMO. I do hope that MT can continue to improve and build upon what Nix has already in a decent defense. It sure would be nice to see MT build that defense into a great defense!

I don't have a huge problem with Nix.

In 10 games, including a game vs Alabama, we gave up less than 20 ppg. With our quick strike offense, we're going to expose our defense and give up some points from time to time.

The 3 blowouts (giving up 58 to WKU, 45 to LT and WMU) make it look worse than it is, but I attribute more to Stockstill and the overall attitude of the program being to "compete" rather than win. We simply played in those games like we wanted to be anywhere but in that stadium and couldn't wait to get back on the bus.
