Understand that charter schools will refuse any kid they want, not follow the same transparency or accountability guidelines, and take taxpayer money to turn a profit. Then there's the disabilities act they do not have to follow--because that's not profitable.
Example: Big city students cost say $6000 per year average to teach.
Here's what people don't know--are ignorant about--some kids cost $1000 to teach, others $3000, and others $12,000. Add it all up, average it all out and you magically get $6000.
Ok, charter school A says I'll take 1000 kids that we pick and take the $6000x1000kids=$6,000,000 in taxpayer money.
Sounds fair, right? No!!!!! They will pick the 1000 kids that cost $1000 to teach and bank the $5000 per kid it doesn't cost because they will not accept kids that cost more to teach-those that may need extra specialists or aids.
Meanwhile the public schools have lost $6 million because they aren't teaching that 1000 block of kids. But guess who the public schools will be left to teach with less funds? "Expensive kids to teach" and with less money too-every kid the charter schools will turn away: second language, special education, special needs, behavior modifications, anyone that might need an expert or extra support staff. Then the downward spiral takes hold.
