Sole possession of First place

"I’m not convinced having two point guards on the floor at the same time will win us a championship."

"I don't see Weston having a good year this season."

"We are kidding ourselves if we are expecting anything more than a 500ish kind of year. There's nothing to indicate that this team is improved or can challenge for a title."

"Doesn't matter what [McDevitt] knows or thinks. Freshman or senior, the talent just isn't there."

"With what has been experienced in the past I think most would be surprised with a winning year."

"Look at the roster, this is the most obvious mercenary squad in the history of mercenary squads... Team will struggle to stay above .500"

"This is just a wasted year..."

"Hilarious if you think the players he brought in will actually come off the bench and do anything."

"The new transfers brought in are not even close to being enough to get this team over the hump."

"...bookmark all you want. I'll bookmark it too and we can gladly bump this after another failure of a season."

"Well as this league continues to get weaker maybe he will begin to have success."

"I don't see any transfers coming in that will do anything meaningful."

I like this team more and more every game. We have all been frustrated, discouraged, etc in previous years and understandably so. But we are legit this year. Size, experience, and depth.

Was thinking last night, if we fall short in the conference tournament and go to the NIT, do we consider that a successful season?

Justified frustration, agreed. I tried to warn people...

2/3 conference season left. Anything could happen, certainly, but they've put themselves into a great spot 6 conference games in.

This conference is tough though. Every game, home or away, can't be taken for granted as we saw UTEP and NMSU lose games they "should've" won. I still reasonably see anyone winning three games at Huntsville in March.

I wouldn't hate it. I like getting home games in the NIT.

I generally like the depth we have, but would like to see Land and Oglesby to get healthy and everyone stay healthy. Does anyone know why Alston only played 7 minutes at SHSU? With Land out in recent games I've been pleased with his contribution, but his minutes and lack of points last night has me worried for the rest of season going forward.

I would consider Oglesby out for the remainder of the season. Pure speculation on my part -- I think NM likes where the backcourt depth is and sees no reason to rush him onto the floor and use a year of eligibility when you already have 4/5 players playing quality ball.

Alston just didn't have "it" last night, in my opinion. Sloppy rebounding night for the team (would've really run away with it if we get 3 D Reb in the final 2 minutes, but gave them 5 second chance points), and that's Alston's bread-and-butter. Mainly he couldn't guard Wilkerson or Boykin off screens where Johnson and Bufford excel at being defensively versatile. It boils down to the matchup and, to your point on depth, we've seen minutes get traded like crazy throughout the season based on matchups. Very important in March.

What has he done to earn another year? First of all, the validity of this thread lasted all of a couple of days. Second, there is still a lot of season left and we have no idea how they’re going to perform down the stretch. For example Mustafa looked tired against Tech in the second half and got abused by their big man. Is the season wearing him down? Third, McDevitt’s only accomplishments so far as a coach here are putting together two mercenary for hire seasons when he believed his job was on the line with this one - from a roster construction perspective - being even worse than last time.

This is a one season throw everything you’ve got to try to produce a winner. So the sad part is after seven years he’s done nothing to build a program because almost every contributor to this team is done after this year. This program will be starting completely over next year as if we hired a new coach. So might as well go find a new coach - for anything less than conference championship and respectable showing in the NCAA Tournament. But as of late Jan? It’s a bit of a stretch to say he’s earned anything here this season while the reality is he’s put the future of this program in further jeopardy.

Yeah I think we should be in a wait and see mode. The team looks solid but we need to see postseason success. Honestly I think Nick might be better off trying to build a new roster with veteran transfers every year. Eric Musselman did that at Nevada and was extremely successful doing it. If we’re going to do that yearly, I don’t have a problem, but the coach has to win.
