In this crazy election cycle, we have talked a lot about the possibility of Trump running as a third party candidate or the scenario where a candidate currently outside of the race is brought in at the GOP convention.

But we haven’t talked much about the Libertarian Party and that might be a mistake according to a new poll that has their candidate, Gary Johnson, taking a decent percentage of the vote in November.

From Townhall:

Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson, the former Republican governor of New Mexico, is polling in double digits against Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in a new Monmouth University poll. In the potential three-way race, Johnson garnered 11 percent of the vote, and, perhaps surprisingly, had a (slightly) more detrimental effect on Clinton than on Trump.

Monmouth also tested a potential three-way race involving Clinton, Trump, and former GOP governor, now Libertarian, Gary Johnson. In this hypothetical contest, Clinton earns 42% of the vote – down 6 points from the two-person race – and Trump gets 34% – down 4 points from the two-person race. Johnson takes 11%

This poll suggests that Gary Johnson could be a factor in this race as a spoiler and this could be a perfect year for a candidate like Johnson to make some noise given the dissatisfaction with the current front runners in the two major parties.

If the race is a close one in November, 11% (probably higher by that point) of the vote being taken up by a 3rd party candidate is a pretty big deal and will probably remind a lot of people of Ross Perot back in 1992.

You would like to think that Libertarians would join the GOP to unite against Hillary but that’s probably not going to happen, especially with a candidate like Trump on the Republican side.

An already fascinating race just got more interesting.

This should make Lynn happy.

Johnson did great things as Governor of New Mexico. Unfortunately only billionaires (Trump, Perot) stand a chance as a third party candidate.
