FOOTBALL MTSU and Mizzou agree to 3-game series

I like this series for MT.

Not so much the gap between game one and two, though. But, this is a good series for MT to partake in.

IIRC, Mizzou has played in the SEC Championship game both years they have been in the SEC. The fact they would agree to come to The 'Boro when they already come to Nashville every other year anyway speaks volumes as to the get this is for whomever negotiated this in the athletic dept. Well done, regardless of how far down the road 2 of the games are.

So this makes two of our ooc games on the road next year (Mizzou and Vandy). I guess we can assume another fcs opponent at home. Who will be the fourth game? Are we going to actually start the rumored series with Ball St. or Bowling Green? Or is CUSA moving to the 9-game conference schedule?

MU finishes out '16 schedule with Middle Tennessee

...So you've got a home-and-home with MTSU, plus a guarantee game?

"That's exactly right. This game in 2016 would be considered a guarantee game for them. Then what they were interested in was a two-for-one from the onset. So we did the guarantee for 2016, then we're just doing a swap in '22 and '23."

What are the financial particulars?

"The guarantee is $1.1 million. Then we're exchanging $200,000 for the other two games."

That 2022 game in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Any thought of moving that?

"Right now it's been scheduled for Murfreesboro. If anything should transpire that interests both programs, we would certainly be willing to take a look at it."

Mike Alden had said he wants to phase out those non-Power 5 road games. Why the new one with MTSU?

"We knew that 2016 was going to be down to the wire as well" like 2015, "just given the available schools and what teams had already had scheduled. We knew 2016 was going to be a little bit tight as well. We were fortunate to find Middle Tennessee State to fill our last game in 2016. But what was negotiated was a two-for-one."

When did those talks start?

"I started talking with them back sometime in the spring. There were limited options at that time. They came on the radar and then, at one time, didn't think they were going to be an option. Then they reached back out and we started discussions again in order to make it happen. They were most interested in a two-for-one type deal, so we jumped on it."

Is getting FBS, non-Power 5 teams to agree to straight guarantee games more difficult or expensive now?

"It's certainly more expensive. The guarantee even three or four years ago, when you were looking to build your schedule, those were in the range anywhere from $700,000 to $900,000. Today, you're not going to get a guarantee game for less than $1 million. Typically, it's around the $1.1 to $1.5 range."

Why is that?

"The demand. It's understood, with the revenues generated by networks for Power 5 conferences and the demand to get those teams on your schedule, it's just allowed them to be able to ask for more."

We won't get respect from these types until we start beating them and also start showing up in games where more than just a few thousand MT fans are watching.

That's why it's important to start winning bowl games (instead of just showing up for the free food and t-shirts).

It's important to get off to good starts in seasons - it really doesn't matter if we go 8-4 if we start out 1-3 because by the time we start our winning - no one is paying attention anymore.

Anyhow, this is a good game in 2016, and who knows where our programs will be in 2023.

Really like that the first is a guarantee. Not a big fan of it when it's a 2-1 and the money equals out.

Is it safe to say this 2022 game probably isn't happening, but they negotiated it as a 2 for 1 to make it look like we didn't just sign up for a money game?

I think they come, they have gone to Toledo and Ark St. So coming here where they recruit isn't a far strech

They have gotten quite a few recruits from the mid-state recently haven't they? (rhetorical comment - listing not required)

excerpt:

...The contract includes an interesting clause. According to the agreement, obtained by the Post-Dispatch in an open records request, Mizzou can reschedule the 2022 game under one condition:

“Should the University of Missouri need to move the game designated for 2022 at Middle Tennessee State University for the sole purpose of scheduling a nonconference home and home series that same year with a Big 12 institution, both parties agree after other options are fully explored to adjust the date of the game scheduled for Sept. 17, 2022 to a subsequent year on a date that is agreed to by both parties. It is agreed by both parties that if there is a change that the University of Missouri will play the game in Murfreesboro no later than the fall of 2025. The University of Missouri must inform Middle Tennessee State University of such a change no later than July 1, 2016.”

What does that mean? Mizzou has the next 11 months to secure a home and home series with a Big 12 school that would allow MU to push the MTSU road trip to 2024 or 2025.....
