The Vanderbilt Commodores appeared to be on their way to an opening week win over South Carolina but they let it slip away. We didn’t learn much about the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders in week 1 as they played FCS opponent Alabama A&M cruising to a blowout win. The MTSU offense had their way rushing for 246 yards and passing for 435 despite allowing two interceptions. Blue Raiders QB Brent Stockstill completed 30 of his 36 passes for 329 yards with 5 touchdowns. Terrelle West led the way in the rushing attack for Middle Tennessee rushing for 83 yards while I’Tavius Mathers rushed for 62 yards while Richie James was the top receiver with 8 catches and Dennis Andrews and Ty Lee each had 4 catches. The MTSU defense allowed just 146, had 1 interception, and 4 sacks. Malik Hawkins led the way for MTSU with 6 tackles, Myles Harges had 5 tackles, and Khalil Brooks had 4 tackles. Middle Tennessee takes a big jump up in competition this week facing a SEC team.

Vanderbilt is 6-0 against the spread against CUSA, 4-1 against the spread following a game that they didn’t cover the spread, and 4-1 against the spread following a loss. Middle Tennessee is 5-1 against the spread in their last six games, 5-2 against the spread following a win, and 1-4 against the spread against the SEC. The underdog has covered the point spread in the last four meetings of these two teams.....

The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders built 45-0 lead at the half versus Alabama A&M before coasting to a 55-0 victory as a 48 point favorite. The Blue Raiders were dominant on both sides of the ball with a 681-146 yardage edge with 38 minutes of possession. The Gamecocks mustered a 308-242 advantage in real estate and survived a pair of lost fumbles as well. Vandy’s strength was on the ground where Ralph Webb totaled 97 yards on 20 carries with Khari Blasingame ran for 68 yards on 15 touches with a trip to the endzone. The Commodores did struggle to move the chains through the air with quarterback Kyle Shurmur completing 8-22 for 73 yards which wasn’t enough to worry the South Carolina secondary.

The Blue Raiders are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games after accumulating more than 280 yards passing in their previous games and are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games after accumulating more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game while the under is 4-0 in Blue Raiders last 4 vs. a team with a losing record. The SEC can only redeem itself so much in Week 2

...The SEC gets one other game against a team in the Top 50 of the model’s rankings when Vanderbilt hosts Middle Tennessee. The Blue Raiders have one of the nation’s better quarterbacks in sophomore Brent Stockstill — longtime head coach Rick’s son — who passed for 4,005 yards and 30 touchdowns last year. He picked up where he left off, going 30-for-36 with 329 yards and five touchdowns in a 55-0 win over Alabama A&M last weekend. Middle Tennessee gained 681 yards in that victory, the fifth-most in a game by any time in the country so far this season.

The Commodores lost the only SEC battle last week when they lost to South Carolina in Will Muschamp’s debut as the Gamecocks head coach, 13-10. Vanderbilt is projected to beat the Blue Raiders, the model’s No. 46 team, by 2.0 points.

As encouraging as that may be, that projection means that Middle Tennessee would be projected to beat Vanderbilt on a neutral field. That sobering projection reflects a bigger problem for the SEC right now. It’s been long assumed that it is the best conference in the country, but they certainly haven’t played like it so far.....

I am screaming at the TV. We are gift wrapping the game their way. I have no words. No shame in losing but to make these kinds of mistakes is senseless
 
i swear to god if we lose this game to stupidity i am going to be so ****ing disappointed. unreal....this is supposed to be our year
