BASKETBALL Middle Tennessee (8-17, 5-7) @ WKU (15-10, 8-4), 7PM, Thursday, February 14, 2019

It will be difficult to control Bassey down low. If we can get him in foul trouble early we might have a chance.

Would be somewhat of a surprise, but the fact we actually have a chance is amazing.

Line will be interesting. I would put it around 8, but statistically speaking, it should be closer to 11 or 12. It's a rivalry game though so 11 or 12 points is a lot.

That literally means nothing. I would be more upset with my team and coach if I were a WKU fan than I am now. Sure they beat WI, but no reason they are not undefeated in conference. McDevitt is a far superior coach than Stansbury. Just hope he is close to as good a recruiter.

To be honest I haven't kept up on wky much this season, but it appears there is at least some chemistry issue with the players, maybe with the coach, and not enough basketballs to share...

As much as I loved the sweep of uab, I'd love, even more, to get the win over wku in BG. Not expecting it. On paper, wku should run away with the game.

Oh I definitely think there is some chemistry issues. Really no other way to explain their record. Their ceiling is much higher than ours, but I think we can beat them. Gamble and Scurry are going to have to stay out of foul trouble to give us a chance though. Massenburg may be called on to give us some quality minutes. He may be the best defender out of our bigs though. Hawthorne may be able to take advantage of Massey while on offense, but I hope we do not rely on Hawthorne to guard Massey much.

excerpt:

...The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders and the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers will meet up on the college basketball court Thursday.

Middle Tennessee comes into this one with an 8-17 mark on the year. Following a three-game win streak over UAB twice and Charlotte, the Blue Raiders fell in their last outing to Old Dominion.

In the loss to the Monarchs, Middle Tennessee’s Donovan Sims led the team with 14 points and five rebounds. The only other Blue Raiders player in double-figures there was Antonio Green with 13 points and six rebounds.

Over on the Western Kentucky side, they’re 15-10 on the season. The Hilltoppers are sitting on a four-game winning streak right now, taking out UTSA, UTEP, Rice and North Texas in that stretch.

In the win over the Mean Green, Western Kentucky’s Charles Bassey led the team on 18 points and seven rebounds. The only other double-digit Hilltoppers player in that defense-heavy game was Taveion Hollingsworth with 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Raiders are 4-0 ATS in their last four overall and 4-0 ATS in their last four versus CUSA. Middle Tennessee is 4-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS win and 3-10 ATS in their last 13 road games.

Meanwhile, the Hilltoppers are 4-0 ATS in their last four overall and 6-1 ATS in their last five Thursday games. Western Kentucky is 4-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS win and 5-2 ATS in their last seven home games.

Middle Tennessee had a nice run going as they headed into that Old Dominion game, but hit the wall in a 55-50 defeat at home. It was the Blue Raiders’ lowest points total since December 8 at home versus Murray State (a 64-42 loss).

WKU has had their own ups and downs on the scoreboard lately, still, the home lift and meager competition should be enough for the Hilltoppers to cover here.....

I’d like to think we have a chance to take this game down to the wire, but I think there’s just too much athleticism between Anderson, Hollingsworth, Bearden, Bassey, and Savage. Going to take a Herculean effort. By the end of the game my guess is WKU covers the 12.

We are out hustling them. But we will not win hitting only 38%. Got to make more shots in the second half.

Kind of feel sorrow for them. The only year they have to beat us and their coach is out. Wait, nevermind.

You look at WKU and you just have to think how under coached they are. I mean the talent difference between us and them is a lot and yet we played with them all the way to the end. If our players sitting out are an upgrade to what we are losing we may not be as far from competing for a conference championship as we think. I will say there were times when you saw Bassey's size bother us, but it was mostly when Gamble was out. I think as long as we have a guy we can have in there when we play guys like Bassey we will be fine. ODU had a big guy, but he was not a factor and they played 4 guards a lot. We just need that big that can match guys like Bassey when needed.

And we need to hit some more shots...look, we are doing everything right for the most part we just don't have enough offensive talent right now. If we shoot our season average last night, we win.

I really liked a couple of McDevitt's comments after tonight's game and I paraphrase:

We are no longer taking steps back after making progress, and

We made both ODU and WKU beat us.
I’m really excited about this team next year! Don’t we have a 6’8 PF on the way? And we need to pick one more big.
