BASKETBALL Middle Tennessee (7-3) vs Cal Baptist (5-5) (ESPN+), 6:30PM, Monday, December 16, 2024

This will be a very good test. With everyone hopefully relatively healthy this can be an excellent momentum building opportunity.

CBU also played (9-2) SMU to a very close 79-77 loss. ESPN's 67% odds of victory for MT seem surprisingly confident.

Team better be ready to play. We lose easily if we don’t bring A game.

Final CUSA/WAC Challenge game and MT draws the "better" of the two opponents in Cal Baptist and fortunately play in the Murphy Center. Despite being 5-5, they are another team that has been tough to gauge. Namely, nearly erasing a 19-point deficit on the road at #23 San Diego State last week.

The Lancers are a two header monster with Dominique Daniels (#1, 5'10" G) and Kendal Coleman (#0/#25, 6'8" F). Daniels leads the WAC with 21.7 ppg (10th in CBB) on 39% FG shooting but is an underwhelming 27% 3FG shooter. He has a quick trigger but is selective when he gets in the paint. Coleman is a big body that is a grinder down low. Coleman scores at an impressive 58% from 2pt FG and is very capable of stretching the defense with 15 made 3PT (on 28 attempts). If you can contains those two, CBU will have a hard time finding another scoring threat. AJ Braun (#14, 6'9" F) has flashes of his scoring ability (9 ppg) down low, but nothing the front court hasn't seen this season.

What makes CBU dangerous is how smart they are with the basketball. They're not a particularly special team on offense but they've finished 6 of their 10 games with single-digit turnovers. Secondly, they are top 100 in CBB in Offensive Rebounding. They were exceptional against SDSU on the glass with 17 Off. boards and it was pivotal in their comeback efforts. Let's hope MT learned their lesson on the glass against UAB because CBU will be just as gritty. Cal Baptist will be the worst defense the Blue Raiders have played this season (#273 in scoring D eff.), and have struggled defending the three allowing 7+ 3PM (MT's average 3PM/game) in 7 of their 10 contests.

I think this is one of MT's easier non-conference games this season, but with their loss at San Diego State last week, there is reason to not take the Lancers lightly. If you can stop Daniels and Coleman, and fend off the offensive rebounding, you should make easy work. The recurring theme in the 2 of the 3 losses this season is the slow start on offense -- 30 1H points vs. Murray and Belmont. If MT can get their scoring going early after the long break, I like the Blue Raiders a lot in this one.

Now it’s ’we’ again eh? Good to know you’re suiting up.. I’m excited to see you in action 🤣

It is for us fans who have followed this school and it's programs for decades. Coaches come and go. Administrators come and go. Players come and go.

But the fans, many of whom have been around for decades, stay and actually support without any ulterior motives.

For people like you and your coach friend it is clearly an expedient relationship.

Pretty choppy so far. Expect offense to pickup in the second half after not having a game for a week. Porter needs to take more shots. Need less Weston and a little more Green imo for offensive punch

You serious? It was a joke.. not a 🍆 so you didn’t have to take it so hard..

My nephew's middle school team can shoot FT's better than this team. I am not kidding either, no hyperbole. Flat out embarrassing.

We will be beyond lucky if we can win this game shooting FT's like this. It's pretty much impossible to beat competent teams when you leave so many free points at the line.

We did our part in the WAC challenge. CUSA might go 4-0 tonight against the WAC, already 2-0 and UTEP is a prohibitive favorite so that should be a W. Southern Utah @ NMSU will be close.

CUSA, including us, looking competitive this year.

Cam came up big in the second half. After he hit those 2 consecutive 3’s his confidence was sky high. We pulled away with that Porter layup in transition… hand it to Cam who has been erratic this year. He definitely had a good one. Good W!

@Wiley… How much $ have you lost this year betting against ‘us’?

Don't typically bet on our games unless I really have a strong read one way or the other or insider info (which I don't get anymore). Quick way to go broke betting on teams you have emotional investment in.

Looking through my history only game I see is Evansville. I had MT on the spread along with them in a three team moneyline parlay. both bets won. There may be others but I'm not going through all my accounts.

Try again

CUSA #8 in the NET

CUSA #8 in the NET

Pretty freakin' nice. I wonder if there's a world where CUSA can steal an at-large. For us, going 0-3 against the MVC was really bad. We really needed to get at least one of those.

Lipscomb will be about a coin flip. Need to get that one.

Then we go play the #1 team in the country. We are playing with house money there. I hope we play hard but loose. The athleticism is there. The shots will have to fall at abnormally high rate and we can't turn it over to have any chance. Much like our Michigan State win, we'll have to get scorching hot. You never know.

After such a long layoff not too unusual we would have some rust to start, & we did. But really put the ball in the bucket that last 10 minutes. With Cam leading the way Raiders score 31 points in about last 10 minutes of the game.
This was another quality win against a good mid-major. Victories over CBU, UAB, USF, & Ohio are pretty nice.
Just getting home I know it's holiday season, but I'm not sure if there were 1,500 maybe little more in attendance. Be nice to see at least 3,000 or more against Lipscomb before heading to Knoxville.
Anyway, after some of the seasons in recent years it's nice to see a competitive team with a pretty decent 8-3 record thus far. Hope we have a good complete game against Lipscomb.

Liberty is the best chance to get an At-Large if they run through conference play. Unless LT and potentially MT can win 16+ in CUSA. More than likely will be a one bid league. I’m afraid this conference is too talented and winning on the road will be a premium. I think 12 conference wins could take the regular season championship.

4-0 against WAC tonight

We had another round of games with them earlier this year and came close to sweeping them all (or maybe even swept them all?)

CUSA has played pretty good overall in OOC play. Shame we went 0-3 vs. MVC those would have been some big wins for us and the conference.

CBU was a dang tough team to play. Athletes all over the place with quickness and height. This was a good intense win against a team most around here thought was a cupcake.
