A rivalry that has spanned over 80 years and has a knack for playing close basketball games. Belmont has owned this rivalry winning four of the last five, but MT leads the overall record 24-19. MTSU's last win in this matchup was at the Curb Event Center two years ago in a double OT win.
Belmont has all the characteristics of the previous two MVC teams we have played -- high eFG% and low turnover numbers. Memphis transfer Jonathan Pierre (#3, 6'9" F) leads the Bruins in just about every statistical category. Second in points (12.4 ppg), first in rebounds (7.2 rpg) and assists (3.4 apg). Mostafa's ex-teammate at TCU, Tyler Lundblade has been electric from deep leading the Bruins in points and shooting 51.4% from 3 (11th nationally) and averages 3.2 made 3pt/game. Brody Peebles (#1, 6'2" G) isn't shy from pulling the trigger from anywhere on the floor and needs to be kept at bay. Peebles scored 26 earlier this season against Furman and was instrumental with 14 points in an OT win against Illinois St on Wednesday.
Belmont isn't as defensively sound as they have been in years past. However, they are one of the best teams in the country at not fouling (top 10 in opp FTA) -- getting to the line will be difficult but that means they won't play a physical brand in the front court because of how valuable Pierre is. Think Lendeborg from UAB and how the fell apart when he exited with 3 first half fouls. Belmont isn't as sound on the glass as UAB is, but they will shoot the ball just as well as Bradley (top 100 eFG%). I expect a shootout, but the rebounding edge will be pivotal (Belmont bottom 100 oReb, but top 100 in dReb). Secondly, Belmont has done a poor job guarding the perimeter. Bottom 50 in D1 in opp 3FG%, and allowed 18 3PM (!?) against Illinois St on Wednesday (you could make the argument that could be point of emphasis in today's scout). Keep taking care of the ball and defend the three like you have been all season and you're in great shape today.
Side note: winning this game would set this team up with a lot of momentum to roll into Knoxville at 10-2 with two more home wins.
