Meant to post this earlier but Walker made the 53-man roster of the Green Bay Packers after being on the practice squad of the Colts last year.

intersting I was watching family feud yesterday and his high school coach was on there. He gave a shout out to Josh and to MT. *obviously the episode was from last year because he mentioned Josh signing with the Colts

Also worth mentioning Jimmy Staten got released by the Giants last week but was picked up by the Patriots (cheaters) and signed to their practice squad.

Practice squad salaries, IIRC, are not as rigid as it is for the active rosters. My understanding is that PS player salary can vary quite dramatically because they do not fall under salary cap constraints

Wish we could see how many of them are BRAA members or give back to the school in some form or another. I remember looking thru a program a few years ago and saw no recent former players under the BRAA part.

BRAA membership is listed in the program every week. I keep one handy year round. If somebody is trying to sell me insurance, services, etc. it's the first thing I check. I know there is a varsity club for former athletes that is not listed but I am not sure if they raise funds.

Randall, the resident accountant on the board, may be able to provide more insight to the accounting regulations professional athletes make, but many of them fall into a fairly high tax bracket (30-40% - a figure that may or may not include local, state, and jock taxes). Add in the agent fees, offseason training and gym memberships, and a $112,000 practice squad salary quickly dwindles.

Take Benny Cunningham as an example. He will take home roughly $750,000 over three years (if he plays out the entirety of his contract). Spread out over 3 years, he will be taking home somewhere in the neighborhood of $250,000 annually (post tax). Knock off somewhere between 3-5% in agent fees and offseason training and he will likely end up around $600,000 over three years (again, IF he plays out the entirety of the contract).

The average NFL career lasts around 4 years. With four years of experience, Benny will not qualify for NFL pension (you need 5 years to qualify for NFL pension), so if Benny makes the average, he takes home somewhere between $600,000-800,000 over four years - hardly enough to live another 50-60 years on.

While it would be nice to see some of these guys give back to MT, most of them need to make sure they get to their second contract (around year 4 in the NFL) before they are financially secure enough to give a larger donation
