FOOTBALL 2019 NFL Draft

Since Stock took over as coach, I'd like to k ow where we rank for players drafted. I can't imagine many being lower than us.

only the newbies to football have less draft picks than is in history. FAU, FIU may have more since Stock has been in charge

I can only think of three who have made rosters and stuck for several seasons. Byard, Benny and the DE who played at Green Bay

Jamari Lattimore.

There’s been a few others who stuck it out for a little while. Sammy Seamster comes to mind and Quice Shakur has had a couple of years in as has Josh Walker.

Overall though, definitely not a line of real success. Walden definitely sticks out from a longevity standpoint.

Hard to recruit good players to come here when high schools in Texas have nicer facilities

:D
Your comment may be sarcasm but Boots era was I-AA. They had playoffs with a very limited # of teams eligible to play in them.

Yes! 1984 was our first date in the 1-AA playoffs: made National Semifinals, lost to Louisiana Tech. Twelve team playoff then; later became 16 in our era. 1984 semifinals was on our own field and deepest we ever went in playoffs. 1985 was the 11-0 regular season, #1 in nation. Lost first round game to Georgia Southern 28-21 IIRC. 1989-1992 was four consecutive years in the 1-AA playoffs. Every time we lost in second round of playoffs. 1994 was our last date, got boat raced by Marshall in Huntington (Marshall also defeated us in 1992 enroute to a 1-AA title).

Those eleven seasons in Blue Raider Football was fun and Boots had us top quality! We fell short of the crown but had the teams to seriously contend.

Twenty years of 1A or FBS has mainly been disappointing met with stagnation: No top 25 wins and no top 25 rankings. No outright championships in Sun Belt or C-USA. One divisional championship and a couple of bowl wins are our main highlights. Our wins against Georgia Tech, Syracuse, Vanderbilt, and Maryland are really expected and not novel achievements.

Don't forget Missouri.

Interesting to see how the G5 conferences did in the draft:

the Group of Five.

  • AAC: 11
  • Mountain West: 10
  • MAC: 9
  • C-USA: 6
  • Sun Belt: 1

Brent reportedly has a rookie camp offer from the Titans and is expected to be meet with the Oakland Raiders soon as well. Camp deal should be imminent.

Franklin is fine. Mallory and the other O line guy can leave anytime. Since they have been in charge of the O line, it's gone downhill. They and Silvoy just aren't getting it done.

I still don't buy the "we don't have the facilities" argument.

No, it's not Bama. It's not Tennessee. But i've been to North Texas. I've been to UAB (pre-restart). Been to Georgia State, USF, and a few others here and there. I'm not sure any of them are light years ahead of ours.

I can't imagine we're the worst in FBS, and I can't imagine it's worse than many FCS schools. We have the 4th highest revenue in CUSA. It would rank 3rd in the SBC, and 6th in the MAC. And of the programs ahead of us in revenue, none of them (other than ODU) are any real significant amount higher.

Revenue leads to expenditure which in theory should lead to shiny new stuff for athletic teams - short of visiting every other G5 program and documenting their facilites, this seems like the best way to compare each program. So, at worst, were middle of the pack in G5. And that's fine I suppose, because that's the program we have.

But many other programs have far outplayed their revenue - so A leading to B leading to C - it's not a stretch to say that the reason for our mediocrity is not because of facilities (or lack thereof).

Put it another way - watching the on field product - do you guys really think we're just an extra practice field, a shiny new weight-room remodel, and a fancy new scoreboard from dominating CUSA? Yeah, me neither.

New facilities may attract better players. Would provide a better impression of a program on the rise.

Shafer and Franklin with better players may just dominate CUSA

We had better players vs. FIU and UAB. We didn't use them well. Dobson was the fastest dude in the stadium and we only used him on sweeps vs. UAB. We ran one sweep fake. We could have used him so much more in other scenarios for the entire game. We have a 6'6 WR and didn't use him. He is more than capable of making plays. We were running RB screens which worked in the 1st quarter and then didn't use them again in the entire game. We had the players. We didn't have the coaching or strategy. The O-Line's coaching and Silvoy showed our weaknesses when it mattered and UAB exploited them. Franklin let us down in that game. Especially in the 2nd quarter.

If we didn't have good players, we couldn't have beaten P5 schools like Mizzou and Syracuse. Cuse beat Clemson the year we beat them. We have the talent. I've always questioned how we used that talent. That's coaching.

Obviously we have good players. Everyone has good players. The more depth and consistency we can get the better.

Look where all those amazing players went in the draft......

I don't disagree.

But I don't think our facilities are in any way some major detriment (especially compared to our peers) nor is it the reason we're not as successful as we should to be.

Only team with a worse stadium than MT is UAB and ODU and that is being rectified. Everyone else is spending money upgrading and growing there program.

How does that matter? UAB won the conference and 10 games. No players drafted. FAU had 2 won 5 games. ODU had 2 and we hung 52 on them. The pros dont always get the best players.

This is an exception. The better teams usually have the draft picks. Look at WKU during their dominant streak.

Like 3 right? Taylor, Doughty, and that TE who got into the stupid bar fight.
Brohm's from WKU teams in the NFL
Forrest Lamp (OL) : 1st round
Taylor (WR) : 3rd round
Doughty (QB) : 7th round
Mike White (QB) : 5th round
Tyler Higbee (TE) : 4th round
Joel Iyiegbuniwe (LB) : 4th round

Other guys who made it on a roster
Mitchell Henry (TE) : UDFA
Deon Yelder (TE) : UDFA
