FOOTBALL Middle Tennessee (1-0) vs #6 Ole Miss (1-0), 3:15, Saturday, September 7, 2024

I can't see this offense scoring unless it's late 4th qtr garbage time against Ole Miss' third string.

They're trying to run a Boise State offense without Boise State caliber players. If you can't do better than 2-something yards per carry against an FCS on an offense that's predicated on run first will we even get to 50 yards against an elite defense? This one is going to get ugly fast.

I'll go 63-7.

To have any chance. And I mean like 1%, you have to take a page from Boston college tonight. Control time of possession, long grind it out hard nose running. I swear they chewed up an entire quarter in one drive

Defensively we will need some fluke shit to happen like at Miami with DL getting pick 6s.

More than likely 60-7 ole miss
Wiley, Ole miss is +41..... seems a touchdown low no?

MTSU ran an air raid last year and Holden was a receiver. He didn’t have to block, let alone in the trenches. VERY different toll on the body. Holden is really good but doesn’t have the frame to line up in-line for a large share of snaps every game. The weight is based off what he is listed at by the program
We’ll agree to disagree & come back to this later. I get what you are saying to a point, but I think the frame is there & definitely the strength based off the plethora of times they pulled him in to go in motion to block on the edge, line up at Hback & protect Nic, or go hand in dirt to block in run game. I don’t recall him letting anyone through or point blank ever missing a block. He gets reach with those arms & quickness. It’s all in the technique. Yes, he’s definitely a great pass catching TE/WR, but his blocking is pretty darn good & definitely no reason to not have one of your best offensive players not on the field. I have a feeling they know this and if not, they’ll figure it out. I’m not arguing with you….just debating based on what I’ve seen & know.

I like your theory & you guys may be right. Masking our best players & plays for the upcoming Ole Miss game is a good theory & may have been the plan. Unfortunately when it comes to Kiffen it probably won't matter. Furman is a perennial FCS contender. They went 10-3 last year before losing in OT to Montana in the FCS playoffs last year.
Ole Miss put them down 76-0. No coach in America relishes destroying their opponent more than Kiffen.
Predicting we'll be a little closer than Furman in score, but not by much.
Ole Miss: 63
MT: 10

Because they weren't holding back. That is an absolute myth. There is a game plan that is installed during the week and the game plan is executed on game day. There's no hiding or saving plays unless they weren't installed during the week. And if they weren't installed during the week it's not a good idea to run them anyway.

They definitely made some questionable subs trying to get the second string some PT but they were not holding any plays back.

They may have been holding back at first but what why they continue to do that when TN Tech came back and eventually went ahead? Also, that's just the offense. What was the defenses excuse?

I'm not concerned that much as I figured this first year was a throw away year and 6-6 or better was gonna be a surprise for me. Didn't Mason start slow at Vanderbilt before he got things going relatively well?
That’s the question I have as well

He held up last year & I think you’re slighting him in weight. Does anybody know how to use the eye test from watching performance instead of just labeling people based off numbers that are suspect at best. We can platoon our way to a dismal season or we can throw our best chance out there & fight with both fists. I’m betting on Willis!

This is why I think they were holding back on what they wanted to show. Jake and I talked about this on the Blue Raider Pod episode that comes out tomorrow, but they opened up the passing attack with some nice plays early to get a 3 score lead (even then only using those plays on 3rd downs) and then was forced into using them on that final drive

No platoon needed! Stock figured that out real quick last year. Well from last year & what we saw Saturday/Sunday night Willis is much stronger than he even looks & is arguably the best blocking TE we have. Deceptively strong & very much a leader on that field. The guy doesn’t get penalties either. He was telling multiple people where to line up, etc. For anybody to think he’s just a pass catcher hasn’t watched the blocks that kid has laid while being at MTSU. He should be on the field 95% of the time or as much as he can give which was a lot from past history. The whole O runs better & when he isn’t targeted he draws the D his way opening up the other guys. Rotate the 2nd TE position but leave Willis unless you need a bigger body for certain plays. I don’t think you’ll find you need to replace him. He helped protect Vatiatto very well at times when OL needed help last season with a few leading to big RB gains & TDs. Who cares that he’s 6’4 215 to 220. He gets it done! The guy shed two blocks to make the tackle after a MTSU INT. One of the best defensive plays of the night. Don’t handcuff that guy for the sake of MT football. Unleash him!!!!
Holden Willis is not holding up at tight end at 210 pounds without a platoon

Holden was used all over the field in felt like but as someone who is more of a receiver than a blocker, there is always going to be a bit of a platoon at the position. With that being said there was a lot of preservation going on in general (and to a fault). Holden will be a big part of the offense. Him and Omari will be the two top targets in my opinion
