Usually coordinators and asst coaches getting fired are just a stopgap measure before the HC is let go or eventually resigns. Sometimes, some of those asst coaches or coord are just being scapegoated...generally speaking. I would be curious to know the percentage of times coords and asst coaches are fired that the program actually turns back around instead of the HC eventually being fired?
As a person, coach stock seems like a loyal, decent, and caring man. Attributes I respect. The reality is though that winning, success, buzz, enthusiasm, and excitement are needed to move the program forward. If that success does not come around every so often, then there won't be a program to employ or help anyone.
I can't help but think that recruiting is a huge problem. It seemed like there might have been signs of some adjustments and improvements, but this season seems to suggest everything is going in the wrong direction.
I know at times coach stock tries to not let injuries be a problem, but at other times it seems he harps on injuries being a problem. I know I am sick of hearing about it after all of these years. Coach Stock has been here long enough to have recruited depth, given them redshirt years, and generally know what he has. Regardless, it seems that MT just does not have the depth. This season, there seems to be about only 3 real playmakers on the team. One of those just went down for the season with an injury. Even so, a lot of the problems were showing up long before he was injured.
In a remotely decent football conference, attrition is a key factor over the long and grueling season. In my opinion, this has been a terrible oversight on coach stock's part. Too often injuries are blamed for lack of real meaningful success when coach stock should have been recruiting quality depth and talent that are being developed to be ready to step in when the unfortunate reality of an injury occurs. I believe the common football parlance for this is "next man up."
I cut a lot of slack for coach stock and advocated for patience in his early years in light of the fact that he was severely hampered by coach mac's APR failures in limited roster size and limited recruiting. That would explain coach stock's struggles in his first few years, but it is a lot of years now since that situation has passed. Coach Stock has had plenty of years now to build and develop quality depth through recruiting. Sadly, I'm just not seeing the positive results.
