I'd like to see them turn that building into a restaurant/sports bar similar to Boulevard. Perfect location.

That is a great idea...

My kid asked why they were closing, and they told her the school has so many exclusivity rights, that they cannot compete with Phillips Bookstore. There are so many books and other stuff that no one else is allowed to sell.

I think it was Blue Raider Book and Supply when I was there...

This was also their last non-campus building. With our contract with Barnes and Noble with Phillips, they didnt want to keep the store.

I do think we need to find a way to make it easier for businesses (local) to make MT stuff. Raider Tees does a good job, but they are about it. I stopped buying from Alumni Hall.

I know this closing was more about books than merchandise, but still. Our stuff is hard to find.

I remember when Raider Tees ran Lightning's Locker Room, he was on the BRZ board and mentioned Nike, Columbia, etc required minimum buys and some items they couldn't sell them all. I get that, but still sucks as that is the only stuff. Just how I am. But even with that being the case, our marketing isn't matching. Soooo much MTSU stuff, no sideline gear like the coaches wear, and what is Nike is random. I want the same Nike hat or shirt that the Power teams have. Stuff like that is so hard to find.

All of that needs worked on.

I didn't know Phillips had a deal with Barnes and Noble. Is the campus bookstore now called Barnes and Noble like at other universities?

I always thought the off-campus stores were not associated with the universities but, admittedly, never cared enough to take the time to find out either.

I like the idea RidRRick had of another Boulevard type establishment.

Textbook Brokers/Blue Raider Book and Supply used to be a fast food restaurant originally. Burger Queen with the "Queenie Bee" as their mascot. It was a regional chain of burger restaurants (think it was headquartered in Louisville). Manchester had one as did Cookeville near Tenn. Tech. They became Druthers in the early eighties, but by then Murfreesboro's closed (around 1979, IIRC). Mom used to stop there after school and get a me burger in the 1970's. There were 2-3 other restaurants that I can't recall off hand before Blue Raider moved there (think they came in around 1986-87).

The original Blue Raider Bookstore was at 114 Baird Lane at College Heights (next to what's now Domino's Pizza). That was a cool fascinating two-level store! Closed around 1982. The original Blue Raider Bookstore carried hi-fi equipment upstairs (Marantz, Superscope, JBL and Sony) and had cool movie posters of its day displayed on the walls (Jaws, original Star Wars, Close Encounters, Smoky and the Bandit, Kramer vs Kramer, 9 to 5 are a few I distinctly remember). They also carried hi-end art supplies, fraternity/sorority shop, the requisite textbooks and school supplies, along with a mini-market setup near the front. Baird Lane building was razed in the 1990's after Jabb's International Cuisine closed (Jabb's was there when I was an MTSU student).

Armondo's Pizza was in that area also when I was a student.
