BASKETBALL NIT vs Chattanooga, Tues 3/18 at 7pm

Attendance: 3,503

Crowd was into it and UTC brought more than I expected (maybe 400-500). I expected more but the ones that came were more into the game than any game I can think of since I’ve been a fan. So far our game was the highest attended NIT game by a decent margin. Georgia Tech had 1,623 against Jax St for comparison. The NIT set the ticket price at $25 which is $10 more than we normally charge.

Dan Earl, Head Coach Chattanooga.
In 3rd year at Chattanooga.
Coaching record currently, 63-38
2024-2025 base salary: $250,000 annually
The Mocs were in the big dance three years ago and their coach left for Clemson. They brought Earl in from VMI. In three seasons, he rebuilt the team won the regular season title this year, lost in the Conference championship game and whooped our ass to move to the second round of the NIT.

That’s more than McDevitt has done in seven seasons.

Chattanooga was missing their best player, or in a size mismatch and still managed to beat us. And i’m pretty sure McDevitt paid more for his players than Earl did for his.

Because McD is not a good coach. Watching the offense this year was agonizing. So much standing around. This team should have made the tournament.

When McDevitt took over the pecking order of DI TN basketball teams was something like this.

Tennessee
Memphis
MT
Vanderbilt
Belmont
ETSU
UT Chattanooga
Austin Peay
Lipscomb
Tennessee State
UT Martin

Now its more like this

Tennessee
Vanderbilt
Memphis
Belmont
UT Chattanooga
ETSU
Lipscomb
MT
Austin Peay

UT Martin

We've dropped from 3 to 8. I don't see how you can keep a coach that has let us drop so low. We used to be the obvious number two in our Metro area behind Vanderbilt in most years . Now Belmont and Lipscomb have passed us by. Criminal to let this happen when we have historically had a better program and much larger support than Belmont and Lipscomb.

All great points. Even in Kermits "bad years" he kept us more respectable in the state of TN

I used to think this was a crazy statement not long ago. I'm pretty sure you are right.

Mediocre mcphee loves overpaying coaches and keeping football and basketball radio broadcasts out of Nashville.

Until football and basketball return to WMOT, I will continue to believe that the parasites marginalizing the school are subversives.

Couldn't disagree with this if I wanted to.

UTC is a very good team. Their guards hits some very tough shots in the clutch just like they did against us. Hope they win it all.

I'm sure he wants to step up, not back.
That's what is sad.

Conference wise it is a step up. CUSA was ranked 8th in NET, while SOCON was 14th.
Competition is better. Still a one bid league, but with the right work that could change.

But school commitment wise as in demanding championships, and fan support wise, I don't know that we are better. And that is just really really sad.

I think the folks in Chattanooga have more to feel good about. Other than MTSU Women’s BB and Oakland HS Football, there isn’t much else to feel good about in the Murfreesboro sports scene.

I think it validates this season a bit and the team we had this year, but we lose SO MUCH. Gonna be a completely new team next year. Not the ideal way to build a program.
