NCAA tourney bracket: #8 MT vs #9 Oregon State

It sux to be seeded so low after the year the ladies had. There is no justification based on record, rpi, strength of schedule, etc. Oh well, another year and we won't get to the promised land of sweet 16s and great 8s unless we can beat a team in their backyard and then knock off a #1.

I don't see how Insell can put a positive spin on this draw.

I stand corrected, possibly - haven't see the bracket yet.

Charlie Creme answered the question of an MT fan that RPI and ranking don't matter what-so-ever to the selecrion committee. My question to that is what is the point in having those rankings then?

a turd flinging orangutan could do a better job than these selection committees...

It seems as if the selection committee selects the top 6 or eight elite programs and places them, the just throws darts for the rest. They know there is a huge drop off after the top teams so to them it doesn't matter where the others are placed.
Well, IT DOES MATTER TO THE TEAMS who have worked all year to get a reasonably correct seed.

Screwed for sure. Maybe the Lady Raiders can do the impossible. Hey, who thought that the Raiders would knock off the vaunted UK Wildcats in 1982!?

Well, with our lack of first round victories over the past few years we just need to win a couple to earn respect. But, the obvious high seeding of mediocre "power" conference teams really shows how little the committee actually knows about college basketball.

actually I think I am beginning to like the bracket, assuming (a big assumpition) MT gets by the first opponent, if we have to face a #1 seed, I am glad it is south carolina.

..."As far as the team we're playing, that doesn't bother me," MTSU
coach Rick Insell said. "I thought we had probably done enough to be a
five (seed) or a six (seed), but then you end up being an eight. You
just take it and go."

During
a Monday night teleconference, Carolayne Henry, the NCAA women's
basketball selection committee chairwomen, said other factors came into
play in determining the Lady Raiders' seed.

"The
RPI has not changed," Henry said in reference to the Lady Raiders'
top-20 RPI. "When we get two teams that are really, really close, ...
then we have to look at some other factors. How many top-50 wins did
they have? Well, they have two. Did they play any teams in the top 25?
Do they have any losses in the 51-100 range? Did they have any losses
that were above 100? Then we start to get down to specifics." .....

..."They had two top-50 wins, but we're looking at their (No.) 17 RPI
versus their (No.) 81 strength of schedule," she said. "They also had a
loss at (No.) 74 to Arkansas." .....

Lady Raiders surprised by seed

another dnj article, with video:

...During a post-bracket teleconference, Carolayne Henry, NCAA women's
basketball selection committee chairwomen, said MTSU's site for a
first-round and possible second-round game was the product of other
factors.

"We seed
regionally, and we try to get teams as close to home as we possibly
can," Henry said. "Due to multiple conferences having multiple teams in
the tournament, sometimes it's unavoidable to send a team farther away
from home simply to avoid having matchups of those (same) conference
teams prior to the regional final." .....

MT women get No. 8 seed in NCAA Tournament

espn's Charlie Creme, apologist for the power conferences and their wholly owned subsidiary, the ncaa selection committee:

...The fact Florida, Florida State, Oklahoma, Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech
were awarded at-large berths, and teams such as Bowling Green, South
Dakota State, Minnesota, Southern Mississippi and South Florida were
excluded, tells us this: Beating other tournament-level competition is
tantamount to being an at-large. The committee declared that last year
in its selection of Kansas and remained consistent with that refrain on
Monday. Schedules are important. Winning against that schedule is more
important. It was not a good day for non-BCS conference schools, but the
better teams made the field...

Just heard Coach Insell on Greg Pogue's show this morning and he made no bones about being upset about the seed. But he seemed more upset about the fact that the fans won't be able to make the trip. He also said he does not care who we play but in looking at the NCAA's OWN RPI the Lady Raiders were 17. So they ignored their own ratings index. Power conferences rule more in women's basketball than mens and we just need to win and stick it up their arse. CRI also said Massarro was very upset about seeding/site and would seek answers even though he felt those answers would never be made public.

I doubt too many Blue Raider fans will be able to afford the trip. Meanwhile, Oregon State will probably have a good contingent of fans there to support their team. Pretty pathetic if you ask me.

We (MT) are on the outside looking in and it will always be that way...the only way is to perform on the court in the tourney. So lets go kick some Beaver butt!

Me too. Let's smash the Beavers and then beat the Cocks!!!

Agreed. A team should never need a reason to get hyped and play well in the NCAA tournament, but now we certainly have one. Hope Insell spins this the right way and gets everyone fired up. I havn't followed the Lady Raiders this year one bit, but simply glancing at their record and their ranking (is this the first time they've been ranked?!) tells me they can play with nearly every one in the country.

What bracket is Tennessee in? Any chance we get a rematch with those fools?

MT was ranked for a couple of weeks before losing to Southern Miss on the road in their only conference loss. It took a few weeks to get back in the top 25.

Believe the only way utk and MT meet up would be nashville at the ncaa wbb final four.

AP writer thinks Oregon gets by Middle Tennessee in this look at the entire ncaa bracket, excerpt:

...STANFORD REGIONAL

FIRST ROUND

(1) SOUTH CAROLINA vs. (16) Cal State Northridge ? The Gamecocks
still have a bad taste in their mouth after losing in SEC semifinals.
They will wipe it away against Cal State Northridge.

(9) OREGON STATE vs. (8) Middle Tennessee ? The Beavers rode an
11-game winning streak, the second-longest in school history and best
since 1982-83, into the Pac-12 championship game before losing to USC.
They will keep it going against Middle Tennessee playing in an arena
they had a lot of success in.

(12) HAMPTON vs. (5) Michigan State ? The Lady Pirates earned the
highest seeding ever for a MEAC team since the women's field expanded to
64 teams. Now they'll win the second game ever by the conference and a
19th straight victory overall.

(4) NORTH CAROLINA vs. (13) UT Martin ? There may be some opening
jitters, but the stellar North Carolina freshmen class led by Diamond
Deshields will help the Tar Heels cruise.

(6) DAYTON vs. (11) Florida ? Jim Jabir's team came up short in the
Atlantic-10 final against Fordham. Still the conference got more teams
in the field than the American and Big East. The Flyers will advance to
the second round for the second straight year.

(3) PENN STATE vs. (14) Wichita State ? There will be no shocker here as the Lady Lions cruise at home into the second round.

(7) IOWA STATE vs. (10) Florida State ? The Seminoles have the best
player on the court with Natasha Howard. The Cyclones don't lose too
many at home. This will not be one of those occasions.

(2) STANFORD vs. (15) South Dakota ? It's rare when the Cardinal have
to leave the West Coast to play an NCAA tournament game. South Dakota's
first trip to the NCAA tournament will be a short one.

SECOND ROUND

SOUTH CAROLINA vs. Oregon State ? Should be a really great matchup in
the post between Oregon State's Ruth Hamblin and South Carolina's
Alaina Coates. The Gamecocks have enough of a supporting cast to come
away with the close win.

NORTH CAROLINA vs. Hampton ? Playing at home will push the Tar Heels
past the Lady Pirates. Having coach Sylvia Hatchell around could provide
an extra lift for the host team.

PENN STATE vs. Dayton ? Maggie Lucas won't let her stellar career end at home getting Penn State to the regional semifinals.

STANFORD vs. Iowa State ? The Cardinal will know what their opponents
will feel like in the regionals facing a hostile crowd. Difference is
Stanford has Chiney Ogwumike and the Cyclones don't.

REGIONAL SEMIFINALS

NORTH CAROLINA vs. South Carolina ? The Tar Heels won by eight in Myrtle Beach in December. They've gotten better since then.

STANFORD vs. Penn State ? The Lady Lions didn't lose many road games this season, but they have no answer for Chiney Ogwumike.

REGIONAL FINAL

NORTH CAROLINA vs. Stanford ? Diamond Deshields thrives playing on
the road in front of hostile crowds. Just ask Duke. She'll help the Tar
Heels pull off another upset ending the Cardinal's run......

2014 Lady Raider Post Season Media Guide

excerpt:

...
EBONY ROWE: Middle Tennessee's star may be
the least well known of the six. The Conference USA Player of the Year,
holds 13 school records including the school's all-time scoring and
rebounding mark and is one of the rare few to be on the national
leaderboard for scoring and rebounding. If the Blue Raiders are going to
make any kind of run in the tournament, Rowe will be at the center of
it.....

6 players to watch in the NCAA women's tournament

dnj:

...The fundamentally-sound team is led by its defense, which starts with its tall post players.

Center Ruth Hamblin (6-foot-6) and forward Deven Hunter (6-3) are both starters and forward Samantha Siegner (6-3) is the team's No. 1 post option off the bench. All three are taller than any of MTSU's top 12 players.

Hamblin leads the nation in blocks per game (4.03), while she and Hunter are the team's top two rebounders, combining for 16.0 rebounds per game.....

Height, youth key Oregon State's first tourney ber

espn power rankings:

...

6. South Carolina: Can SEC Player of the Year Tiffany
Mitchell follow in Dawn Staley's footprints and lead her team to the
Final Four as just a sophomore? South Carolina's gritty defense ranks
seventh in the nation at 55.0 ppg allowed. But perhaps a more telling
stat is the top-seeded Gamecocks' 10-2 record on the road this season.
They open the tourney three times zones away from home in Seattle and
then would advance to the Stanford Regional.
...

24. Middle Tennessee: The more things change (MTSU just completed
its first season in the C-USA) the more they stay the same (the Blue
Raiders are back in the NCAA tournament for the 10th time in 11 years).
Enjoy your annual chance to see Ebony Rowe.

...

32. Oregon State: Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw was espnW's
Coach of the Year, but Scott Rueck's name was in the conversation, too
(among others), after one of the biggest Division I turnarounds. The
Beavers were 10-21 a year ago, but now they're back in the NCAA
tournament for the first time since 1996. The Beavers, whose .349 field
goal percentage defense ranks seventh in the country, won 11 consecutive
games before falling to USC in the Pac-12 final. Even more impressive?
The 11-player roster includes nine underclassmen. But Rueck, in his
fourth season in Corvallis, Ore., has a long history of success. He won
the Division III national title in 2009 after George Fox went 32-0.

Yes, hire a coach who has won it all at the collegiate level...

...When MTSU assistant coach Alysha Clark saw her team's name revealed during ESPN's Selection Monday show, she leaped from her chair and began to high-five several of her players.

But it wasn't because of the Lady Raiders' (29-4) seed (No. 8) or their opponent.

This first thing Clark noticed was MTSU's location for its first round NCAA tournament game against ninth-seeded Oregon State (23-10), which will tip off around 7 p.m. on Sunday (TV: ESPN2). And it was a place with which she is very familiar.....

Clark enjoys destination

dnj:

...Every player spent time studying Thursday during the five-hour flight to the west coast.

The
Lady Raiders (29-4) will miss at least three days of class and if they
beat Oregon State in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Sunday,
the players will miss at least five days of class.

"There's
a lot these girls deal with that everybody doesn't see," MTSU assistant
coach Alysha Clark said. "Academics is one of the main ones. That's a
huge part of who they are and what this team is about." ......
