Very sad to see MT with multiple once proud athletic programs such as men's baseball & basketball having now become expected cellar dwellers year in & year out.

This team is in severe danger, very likely, to miss the bsb tournament. I remember when that happened several years and a couple of coaches ago, we were shortly thereafter in the market for a new coach.

How could the goober squad choose this coach. It’s so destructive. The baseball program is terrible. We can’t even win a series. We are at the end of the season and have shown zero improvement. Could argue that we have gotten worse. We need real change.

I admit I don't follow college baseball (i love the sport, but just don't have the time to keep up with college baseball).

But when I was a student, with Coach Pete, and building the new stadium - it seemed like we had one of the power programs around and the future was bright. Tennessee has become a bit of a baseball hotbed with UTk and Vandy becoming powerhouses, there's plenty of talent.

How did we fall so far so fast?

Bad hires. The first hire after Peterson retired was a complete fiasco. The choice was the Arkansas State coach who then backed out. The guy stayed at ASU and has been below mediocre and is below .500 for his career and was left with the Peterson assistant who had vacated his office to make way for the ASU guy. The rest of the hires were basically retreads. No ambition to do any better, and our sorry leadership is okay with mediocrity.

Why not one of the JUCO coaches in TN? 4 of them are over 40 wins on the season
David Shelton at Walter State would be one of my first calls.

Or maybe offer a competitive salary to get a major program’s assistant. It seems our admin don’t understand that paying the additional $25,000 to $50,000 up front will pay off with increased success and attendance. Even Troy was able to do that.

That entire episode demonstrates how stupid our administration is.

Raffo was the assistant coach at Mississippi State for Ron Polk. Polk retired again and had publicly stated he wanted Raffo to get that job. The AD interviewed Raffo and was like ….nope.

So here comes M&M offering a guy the job that his own school turned down, even though he was as set up as possible. M&M not notice the red flags?

Then to take the lazy way out to give it to Pete instead of really looking for the best candidate. The sad part, we could have hired Andy Haines, who just got his masters with us and had been a coach over Mac. Andy went on to be a single A and AAA manager plus be the hitting instructor for the Cubs. Brewers and Pirates (he’s only 47 now). But no let’s just hand it to Mac once we were rejected by the MSU reject.

Great evaluators

They need to get that fixed.

Let's face it, there's a ceiling for MT football. Nothing to do with the school, just the way the system is rigged.

But there's no reason we can't become the conference's premier school in the other sports (basketball is tough, but still, no reason no to be competitive). We have everything we need to be at the top of the conference in baseball.
