AAC has officially announced the minimum schools must spend.

* $10m over a 3yr period
* up to schools how to distribute
* up to $2.5m can be Alston payments that most already do anyway
* Schools that fail to meet the $10 million standard at the conclusion of the 2027-28 academic year could be subject to a “review” of their membership status within the conference

This is what I mean when I say we don't want to get left behind. Not from a conference realignment standpoint, but a $ standpoint.

I haven't heard about CUSA setting a minimum, but can all our schools swing averaging $3.3m per year extra? That is what our peers are spending on the low end, and what will be required for us to compete.
I'd bet the PAC will be doing more than that.

The big question I have :

Where would the money come from?

Build Blue Now is GREAT. It's needed. But has MT "maxed out" the money it can raise at this moment? Can you convince the$$$ boosters to give another $3-5 million annually?

Or

Will MT need to sell the football program out with 2-3 $$$ games annually to find $3-5 million for revenue sharing?
Will they have to cut non-revenue sports?

All my thoughts exactly.

We can't keep going after the same big donors. New $ has to come in, which only winning will bring. But can't win without $. Chicken and egg.

No one wants a bunch of $ games again, and honestly, if the SEC moves to a 9 game conference schedule and creates an agreement with the B1G for games, there will be less and less options for $ games. Florida will still need to play FSU. UGA still GaT.

And as for eliminating sports, to be in FBS we are required to have 16. We only have 17 (8 men, 9 women). So there isn't any extra to cut off to save.

Floyd naming rights, etc. Even CUSA naming rights could bring some money.

I'm sure this has been discussed (formally or informally) by the powers in Cope / Floyd, but I'd really like to see MT partner with the city on a formal, financial level. Hotel tax with portions of hotel tax going to help fund athletic facility improvements at MT with the goal of bringing in MORE concerts, events, etc there that drive more revenue for the city.

I'm sure the numbers have changed some, but when I lived in Jackson a "drive through" guess spent (on average) $70 while an overnight guest spent closer to $200. Need to find a way to get more people to come to Murfreesboro, eat, shop, etc.

Maybe start by getting a new mayor that sees the value in restaurants and bars by campus and revamping the square instead of being a douche bag and getting more vape shops and chain restaurants.

My In-laws moved to the boro on a temporary gig. They are IU grads. It has been embarrassing telling them how I loved the boro and then them actually living there. Also embarrassing taking them to football and basketball games. My FIL was shocked at how empty the murph was for the basketball game Thursday,

The downtown / campus area has a LOT of potential. Would love to see city create a "gateway" between downtown and campus on Main Street. Make the Main Street from Broad to Rutherford a strip with classic homes, local business, etc.

I'd love to see Boro build a "factory" (like Franklin) with a Lift/Farmer's Market area (like Jackson) downtown (honestly, something like this could be a GREAT way of bringing life to the downtown area (especially with Project Keystone)

With Title 9, I don't believe we can eliminate any sports, unless it is a men's sports. I was talking to one of the hockey players at a football game this past season and I asked if they were going to be a sponsored sport. He told me that with Title 9, they would have to add two women's sports to add hockey. I am no expert on it, but it was mentioned we only have one extra women's team vs number of men's, so maybe it's related to total number of athletes.

Like everyone else, there is so many ways the city and the university could work together to make this better.

Does anyone know when we will see dirt moved on the Keystone Project?

I'd love to see MT add hockey (and same for TSSAA / RuCo HS), but MT would likely need support from Preds to build a "Ford Ice Center | Boro" that would serve as practice facility for MT, local HS, and community. You'd probably need 2 rinks to accommodate the 6+ RuCo HS + MT.

I would love this too. Hans told me to do that they would have to divert more money from football and dont want to and would have to add a women’s team for title 9.

I get not wanting to divert money from football, but adding a women's sport is not that entirely big, IMO, if we added say, bowling or beach volleyball. I recognize it would add some costs like travel, but utilize LTA (or another alley) and how much is it to build a beach volleyball court?

That's where a partnership with MT, city, and the county to make that happen for all you mentioned.

Lot of RUCO kids playing hockey elsewhere.

Tennis and golf are prime examples of what happens when the school works with the community. Adams with the city and the club at The Grove.
A hockey center would be a great addition.

And I too get not taking $ from football, but another low cost women's sport could be added with hockey. CUSA has bowling now and I know 20yrs ago I took bowling for one of my PE credits, so work a deal with Strike & Spare to host.

There is a huge difference in just adding an expensive sport like hockey randomly compared to bringing in an existing successful club sport.

But again, all null and void if we can't find money to even compete with our peers in football.

So, what does that mean? Honestly, I have not done a good job of keeping up with it.
It means we are with our peers and can pay athletes directly from the school. The max for this year is around $20m per year and can be distributed as a school sees fit. Most are giving the largest percentages to football and MBB of course. It is up to the schools/conferences how much of that $20m salary cap to spend.

As I mentioned above, the AAC has set a minimum of $10m over a 3yr period. So avg $3.3m per year of the $20m cap. I expect CUSA to have a similar policy. For the AAC, schools that can't do it could be subject to conference removal. It will take a few years, but I think FBS and P4 could lose a few schools. If the MAC sets a minimum, can schools like Akron really spend an extra $3m/yr? Can SHSU? Heck, can Wake Forest spend what FSU/UNC will?

Now collectives like Raiders Rising will stay as they can bring in new donors who aren't previously affiliated with the school, and those deals won't be scrutinized by the NCAA clearing house inspection that is part of the settlement. IE I'm on record as a BRAA member and therefore associated with the school. The Power schools fought for this, so you'll have Ohio State doing the full $20m with $10m for football, then donors giving another $10m, so you'll still have a $20m roster for football like they did last year.

Schools will grab $ however they can. Conference naming rights, stadium naming rights. I mean Penn State just accepted a naming deal for the field at Beaver Stadium, now West Shore Home Field. A $50m 14yr deal. FIU and Pitbull. Etc.

For us to compete even on the G6 level, it will require money. Period. I still think these $5m freshman QBs are ridiculous. You have to earn the big money in the NFL. Should be same here. Reward the players that perform. But as of right now, it isn't that way.

I have no problem with players earning money...in certain ways.

Not a single person would say no to Vatiatto doing a commercial for The Boulevard, or Boldyreva and Gregory doing a signing at Murfreesboro Ford, and getting paid for it. That is true NIL and should've been allowed years ago.

And if they want to allow the schools to pay a bit to players as a "salary", ok. But there should be a system. CUSA 3rd yr QB makes $X. OL makes $Y. Same at an AAC or MAC school to create parity. Stop this year to year moving mess. Make culture matter again.

But until that happens, wild wild west. I LOVE college football. And even if they are here a year, if they win in TrueBlue, I'm happy.
But the appeal to regularly drive 5min to one and 30min to my other two local D2 schools and watch them play is growing stronger.

Then as the article said, coaches. Eddie George just went to Bowling Green. The guy he replaced was making $525k. Mason is a bit over $1m. Traylor makes $2.5m at UTSA. That isn't sustainable as it shows that players won't make the same either, leaving us behind UTSA and Bowling Green behind us.

Levels in college football will be developed super quick.
