Ty Nix

So is he getting a scholarship? Seems like we could've gotten a bigger player, he is only 270 and barely 6'.

He will most definitely be on scholarship. Would take a year in the weight room to put on 20-30 pounds..

And there was one other DT on the radar that MT could've gone with, but he was 6-foot as well, so there was no real separation there.

Ty Nix had multiple college offers, which included Appalachian State, Furman, Southern Illinois and Tennessee-Martin.

so we beat out a bunch of fcs schools again for a coaches son, not saying he is bad player just would've waited to see what else was out there. he would always be available, and Ole Miss ain't coming for him

Gotta think that if you are happy with Tyrone Nix as DC (and want to keep him around) you need to get his son on scholarship regardless of who else is recruiting him.

And Ap. St. is a pretty good member of the Belt (FBS) and going to a bowl this year. They have recruited well for years.

I think his son is worth the offer. It keeps our DC in place. He will can be a good fit. We are not the kind of school that is going to get DT that are really can't miss, we have to develop them. Getting a local guy can only help us.

Shaq Huff and Bennett are only 6' and have been great for us in the middle. Nix and co. will beef him up. He is definitely athletic.

Also, this is a very likable young man and he will be a leader. He will add fire and fun to the line. Great interview for a Junior in high school since this was a last year interview. Very impressive.

Yea, I agree. He may not have the most outstanding measurements of size in the region, but he seems like an eager football loving young man with plenty of potential including excellent leadership potential. Hopefully being a coaches son, he will appreciate the need for and benefits of developing and growing stronger during a RS season. If that's the case, a young man like that just might be able to add that 20 or 30 lbs of size and strength to be a 290+ lbs of DL with a good motor and tons of excellent defensive attitude.

Also, it seems that MT really needs to make better inroads into local recruiting. Plus you never know, a young outspoken leadership type just might have influence with other local players not only this season but for the next few seasons. Who knows, there might be a growing and developing local HS Jr or So who likes and/or looks up to Ty Nix that might be a local recruit that MT would love to get. Just sayin'

I know for a fact that a couple of SEC schools have shown interest. And why would we wait to sign him? Very few 4-5-star players at his position go to non P5 schools

I didn't say or 4 or 5 star kid would be available, but i'm sure some 3 star kids would be and to use a ship up on him is not a good business decision. He can go to school for dang near free since his dad is an employee. What sec schools want a 6' 2 star d-tackle, unless they are trying to get his dad to join the staff.

I'll leave the "Business Decisions" to those that are around the program 24/7 and know a hell of a lot more than you or me.

He won't be a wasted scholarship and he was getting one somewhere regardless if he went here or not. He'll end up being the same size as Bennett and Huff are now and is a very good run stopper. He's gone up against some of the best backs in the state and has shut em down. Very smart player. He would have been a good pickup regardless of who his dad was.

Clearly, I'm not one of these guys out around the county HS fields at every game and practice. From what I can tell though, the young man is a legit scholarship player. My impression has been high on his intangibles. Admittedly, he doesn't have the size, as is, of a starting SEC DL. There is plenty of reason to believe that a RS year training in the weight room will likely see him grow into a good and strong size for a DL. From what I can tell, he looks to be a legit player on a legit team that competes in the strongest region in the state. A region that I understand has finally come to be recognized nationally as one of the areas known for incredibly fertile recruiting grounds.

So, I'm not understanding the negatives on this young man verbally committing. I think it speaks volumes to the quality of men that our coaches are that their sons really want to play for them. If someone is concerned about favoritism, I don't really get that after watching Brent Stockstill.
