excerpt:

...Robinson’s next decision on Byard will be even bigger. The franchise tag for a safety is projected to cost over $13 million. A long-term deal could cost in the realm of $50 million guaranteed. Fortunately for the Titans, Byard is content to play out the final year of his rookie deal, which pays just over $2 million—greener pastures await.....

All signs point to a big (maybe the biggest) payday for Titans safety Kevin Byard

excerpt:

...What will Byard’s contract extension look like, assuming one gets done this offseason?

Neither Corry nor Michael Ginnitti, Spotrac’s managing editor, think Byard’s deal will approach the six-year term of Collins’. Instead, both analysts see Byard signing a shorter — but still lucrative — multiyear deal that would set him up for another big contract further down the line.

Corry’s estimate — a three-year, $45 million extension starting in 2020 — would give Byard the highest average salary among the league’s safeties at $15 million per year. He thinks about $30 million of the new deal would be guaranteed, maybe even a bit more.

“Typically, if you’re a really good player, the more bites of the apple you can get, the better off you are going to be,” Corry said. “So I would contemplate doing a three-year extension. I’d want to go shorter to get another bite at the apple when I’m in my prime.

“You look at Earl Thomas, who is 30, and he’s getting paid coming off two broken legs. That shows what you can do when you play at a high level. So if (Byard) can stay healthy and play at a high level, he can take advantage of the market then by going shorter rather than longer now.” .....
