Per Borthick, Richmond and the team have reached a mutual agreement that has resulted in his dismissal from the team.

Perfect way to start the conference tourney...

point guard released from team

Of all those new guards, modern day stats on transfers, I've been wondering which young guard MT would lose this year. IIRC, he came in with the highest credentials. Down the stretch, some of the other guards started to really show some flashes of excellent play. I'd really feel better about next season if MT can close out the conf tourney strong. There appears to be some young talented players with potential for a bright future at MT. What could have been this season if there was some steady senior leadership this year. Oh well, hopefully, some new leaders will emerge for next season.

BTW, Richmond seemed to start the season reasonably strong. Played fairly well for a young player. He didn't seem to develop much from mid-season on. What can you do?

He was a talented F guard. Good enough to earn multiple starts - its not uncommon for young players to hit a wall. I am disappointed but have expected this type of thing each year. You either produce or get recruited over. Maybe in this case he just wasn't a good fit, we will never know.

Maybe its not realistic but it would be nice if we could get to a point where we could redshirt a few of our F from time to time - create a program where guys really develop and then only sign a JC guy to fill a need.

Ironically, isn't one of the new JUCO forwards from this past year's class redshirting i.e. Xavier Habersham?

I agree, it would be nice to see some more of the players RS. From what I understand, the coaching staff intended to RS Phillips, but Phillips and his parents wanted him to play his freshman year. I guess with the culture in college basketball being for so many players to transfer after 1 or 2 seasons, there just might be some pressure to play some too early. Especially if they look to have really good potential in 2 or 3 seasons making them really good starters for 2 or 3 seasons.

I certainly haven't been known to be a Kermit apologist, but his early departing players the last number of years appear to be in line with most of all D1 basketball programs. IIRC, about 1 of 3 or 4 freshman will leave their program by the end of their first year. Kermit had, what, 4 freshman guards this year? Statistics strongly suggested 1 of them would be leaving by the end of the freshman year. I've been wondering all season who it would be.

On the other end, a lot of teams are having some good success in landing those unhappy transfers. I guess the sitting out a season becomes a de facto RS among other factors that enable some of these players to be really helpful to their new teams. It would be nice if Kermit could land 1 or 2 of them along the way. IMO, MT really needs help in the paint i.e. PF/C.

Knew someone would be leaving since Davis has repeatedly stated he is actively recruiting for a couple more late signees and we're already at the limit.

Hate that the person leaving is one of the freshmen - was hoping they would give us good play at a the 1 & 2 for the next 3 years - IMHO (and I by no means have any knowledge other than watching games, a couple of practices, and what is in the media) Richmond had the most potential of either PG and he had just begun showing that before his injury. I loved his 'big-time" floater in the lane - we've had few who could make that shot - Hate it any time we lose a 3 star - we get so few

As an aside - in every interview the freshmen talked about how tight they were - best friends - ran around together - looking forward to the future together - etc. Hard to believe a freshmen would make those comments unless true.

Interesting comment from Borthick was that "he just didn't seem very interested to play down the stretch". Almost made it sound like the injury wasn't serious and he held himself out or he and kermit have had it out and he doesn't want to play anymore.

We'll probably never know. What we do know is that he played well (and IMHO was looking like the PG of the future) in his last two games as a Blue Raider. Could say, as you could about any player who played, that we wouldn't have beaten WKU without his contribution.

We REALLY need Ivory to be able to return next year from his comcussion issues. If he cannot medically return, what was once seen as a strength for the future (young PGs) may end up being our Achilles heel due to depth.

Yeah this surprises me. I thought Ivory would leave based on his concussion issues. Too bad. Fortunately we have a mini Marcos Knight in Giddy Potts. DJ Jones has waited and waited. When called he has produced. They are both back next season (as well as Raymond). Ed Simpson has been hot and cold, but still will be solid for us. Not too concerned. It stinks, but is what it is. Just going to result in 3 losses from the rotation so we are ok.

I'm more concerned about Ivory's health issues. I have a nagging fear that his issues will end up derailing his career. That guy has shown enormous potential when he was healthy. Simpson reminds me of a young Calvin O'Neil. Potts certainly has been strong. If all three of those guys are healthy and playing, we are going to be fine at guard. Worried about Jacob though.
