The older downtown hospitals in Memphis have closed as the newer ones have moved more to the population centers in the outskirts. As an example, the huge Baptist hospital that was located within blocks of the medical school has been closed and imploded. There still are hospitals in the downtown area, but most are more specialized centers. The whole downtown area of Memphis surrounding the medical school is more deserted and rundown.
What a great time to move the school to the center of the state and upgrade facilities at the same time. I have no proof of this, but simply is my thought.
