Never been a fan of this

May just be me but the tweet is disappearing. Borthick's tweet said

"Stockstill didn't rule out potentially playing both QBs all year long either. I wouldn't be shocked if that happened either."

"Both (QBs) will play in all the (early) games. You may look up and see that both have 40 snaps each."

Might work vs JSU and some other bottom feeders but I can't see that working vs quality teams.

With Jackson State I hope we see both QBs get a good amount of PT.

Same with bama. Now if we're only down a score or maybe within ten in Tuscaloosa, I'd stay with the QB playing if he's what has kept us within striking distance.

But I have always been leery of a qb controversy. I think Stock has enough credibility with the fans that they know he's not going to play favorites. It's not Mccollum who even when Clint Marks came in as a reshirt freshman and played better than Hines, but mccollum insisted on sending andrico back onto the field, for multiple consecutive three and outs while Temple was scoring at will. Temple had not won a road game in forever until that game. I get angry even now, thinking about that game.

Am I the only one that thought grammar look head and shoulders better at the spring game

Grammar looked great in the spring game in 2014 too. I'm not a big critic of Grammar. I thought he started the season pretty good and looked at times like a championship QB and I think he can be one, but the last few games he looked just okay. He has to stay healthy and limit turnovers. That's the key to him I believe. From what I've seen he can do pretty much anything the coaches ask of him.

I thought he looked average in the 2014 game. I thought he looked improved when the season started. I thought stock looked like he threw better but turned it over. I think this spring Grammer was the better passer and game manager. I think he was dinged up at the midway point. Probably would have sat a game or two if we weren't trying to save stocks redshirt. Same thing could happen this year so it's good to have two but to me the starter is obvious.

I think they are both good enough to win games. Statistically they were very similar in the Spring Game

Austin Grammer 11-15-145, Brent Stockstill 19-25-125, Nolan Genovese 3-6-26.

Also keep in mind (if my memory serves me right) that Brent threw more screen/swing passes.

Also a pass from each in THIS video

I think the biggest thing Austin needs to work on is his timing and not second guessing himself (as he mentioned in the interview). I heard Buster yell "throw it!" a few times at Austin during the Spring game.

We need Stock to get some playing time just in case Grammar goes down. Grammar was absolutely mutilated on one play at Marshall and he didn't seem the same the rest of the season. I think he played hurt because his ball looked slower in the second half and the rest of the season. We basically had no back up and were committed to red-shirting Stock. We were in a tough situation. Having two that can go is a great thing. I won't worry about this. two good quarterbacks.

I still remember that game, and it was incredibly painful to watch.

I have no real way of knowing if or how much an injury may or may not have been effecting Grammer's performance in the 2nd half of the season. I do think he had some struggles. Grammer was not completing much of anything beyond 5 or 10 yards unless the WR was able to get some decent YAC.

By mid-season, other teams had figured that out about Grammer. They pressured him accordingly, and opp defenses were able to stack the box to jam up MT's run game as well defend vs the short passes. IIRC, coach stock admitted as much about the last part of the season. I think that is why TOs might have gone up, the coaching staff were pushing Grammer to throw over the top of defenses and stretch defenses that would also help out tremendously with the running game. I think in addition to the defensive struggles down the stretch of the season, I think Grammer was just not able to execute throwing the ball down the field with much of any consistency beyond 10 yds. Despite the coaching staff recognizing it and pushing him, his performance dropped off as he attempted deeper passing. The results of which we are all familiar. Coach Stock has been pretty open since the spring I believe about the QB position being open particularly to the QB who can complete passes down the field. In what is likely wise, I suspect the QB to see more playing time will be the QB who completes down field without a bunch of INTs. This would likely unleash the horses in the backfield to have some really strong running games which most of us know they are capable. IMO, it's wise and good old-fashioned football coach stock looks to be trying to implement on the offensive side. If everything can come together, especially the deep ball, it could be a right good offense this season. That's a lot of ifs, I know.

Good post DW, I noticed much the same things. The late season struggles can be attributed to the dip in QB play (for whatever reason).

This is a team that is pretty well loaded this year. We'll go as far as the QB takes us and how Stock manages this will be key to the season.
