BASKETBALL Middle Tennessee (20-9, 11-5) vs Liberty (23-6, 11-5) (CBSSN), 6:30PM, Thursday, March 6, 2025

Liberty currently trailing by 14, midway of 2nd half to Kennesaw state

Liberty getting all the officiating calls their way, 24-6 on FTs

Man I would love to be at the game this Thurs v Liberty. Their loss today has to have our guys eager.

Projecting here but IF we win Thurs and presumably against FIU (last in the league) then we enter the CUSA Tourney at 22-9.

AND if we win that then what, 25-9? That should garner a respectable (all things considered) seed.

Even if not, CNM has done well this year. No arguing that. We all want more, but credit given where credit is due.

If we don't get our 3pt shooting straightened out and learn how to defend the pick and roll this will be a loss. We do not match up well against these types teams. Hopefully we will have a big crowd to help us because we will need it.

They looked faster and more fundamentally sound. Should be a tough out in the conference tournament. However, I think our guys will also be. We will see how the chips fall. I’m hoping we miss Liberty and Louisiana Tech.

Liberty is just better. Tons of legit shooters and we could not keep up with their cuts and screens to the basket. Surprised we only lost by 5 a sit felt like Liberty was in control the entire game.

If we don't win out in Huntsville I doubt we get invited to the NIT. Purely speculative, but looks like CBIT offer would likely be in the cards again.
May be too early, but if that plays out to be the case would a couple of wins in the CBIT be enough to save CNM's job next year with a 24 or 25 win season in hand?

I’m sure it would be. I don’t necessarily agree with it but a 24-25 win season is hard to get rid of a coach after.

NIT's new formula is wacky, but I've seen some predictions having us in.

The 1st non NCAA tourney team in the top 12 Ken Pom conferences (we are in top 12) get in. Then you've got reg season champs that must be avg 125 in combined Ken Pom, BPI, NET, KPI, SOR, etc. We should meet that metric no problem.
Then you've got the new Crown tourney too that will take some usual NIT teams.
We are 3rd in most rankings so probably 3rd in the combined metric, so it all could go either way.

As for extension, 24-25 wins would earn that (I'm still not personally 100% sold on McD), but only a short extension. Not a full blown new contract by any stretch of the imagination. I'd be good with just a year as it's rebuild every year now anyway.

Yeah, NIT is out unless we make it to the Conference finals by beating Liberty who has the highest RPI in the league. That would be our only shot. So we either need to win the tourney or expect the CBIT. The best situation for our conference is we win the tourney and Liberty gets an at-large.
