Middle Tennessee (13-11, 6-5) @ Rice (7-15, 4-6), Thursday 7PM

DNJ:

...The Owls (7-15, 4-6 Conference USA) have spent most of the season near the bottom of the league standings, but they're coming off their biggest win of the season on Saturday.

Rice beat then-Conference USA leader Western Kentucky in Bowling Green to pull off the biggest upset of the season in league play. How the Owls will respond after such a season-defining moment when they get back to their home court isn't known, but MTSU coach Kermit Davis said he wasn't surprised to see them pull off the win in one of the league's toughest places to play.

"They've been good on tape and they've been really competitive," Davis said. "I watched them against Old Dominion when we were scouting Old Dominion and they played well.....

Best shooting team Davis had ever had. We heard that often in the pre-season. And shooting as in 15-20 footers. You don't get a reputation as a shooter by scoring in the paint but Davis, as he always has, sticks to the 'work it inside,' use the 3 as a secondary weapon only. Our team, which is more suited as a 3 point shooting team, is trying to do what it is not very good at, finishing and scoring inside in the paint. Darnell Harris, for example, is probably a better perimeter shooter than inside scorer but no way will he be given the true green light to shoot 3's freely. Case in point, after a close win I believe against Southern Miss. in the post game comments Davis said he thought we shot too many 3's in the first half. Well, we shot 11 3's in the first half and hit 6. We should have been shooting more 3's with that kind of percentage.
We have 4 players hitting over 35% from 3, 2 over 40% and 2 more over 34%, all good 3-point shooting percentages. Six players in all at over 34%. If we increased our number of 3-point shots, since this team does have good shooters, our offensive production would certainly go up, especially shooting 3's instead of failed attempts in the paint by players who simply are not especially good finishers inside. But, no way will it happen.

Is it true that with 8 minutes left in the game, down by 12, that the Raiders have shot only 4 3's?!?

Now that the game is out of reach, Davis will turn loose those 3-point shooters. Too late but it is the way it is.

If the live stats are correct, that MTSU only shot 7 3's for the game, making 3, and 2 of those made 3's came in the last 3 minutes which enabled the Raiders to have a chance to win, then it is almost laughable. We have a team with a number of shooters who are not coached to shoot but to work it inside where we lack finishers.

Pi$$ed away a win last night. Dumbfounded that we did not continue to press them throughout OT. That is what sparked the comeback at the end of regulation and it sounded like, on the radio, that Rice cracked under the pressure. Why not go back to it?
