McGuire C-USA's COY

Exactly. I know a lot of people are disappointed in the end of the season, as am I, but this team overachieved all year long. They were never the best team in the conference but they played like it for a majority of the season. Wish I could say that it will translate into an even better team next year but I don't think it will with 5 starters graduating and JeBavy likely getting drafted.

Jebavy also took home Newcomer of the Year honors. Damn shame MT didn't get him out of high school. Missed the boat on that one.

Which leads me to a thread derailing type of question - is Jebavy's season the best one-and-done campaign in MT history? Better than Dendy?

Are we sure Jabavy will, or even could, leave after one year?

Rules may have changed but IIRC a JUCO BB player can be drafted and go pro after his 2nd JUCO year, if he instead chooses to go to a 4 yr. school he has to stay two years before being eligible for the draft. I thought the only players who can be drafted after the Jr. year are players who started at a 4 year institution.

Hmm that's a good point. Borthick tweeted out the other night that Jebavy could go real early (like rounds 2-5 early) in the draft. Maybe the rules have changed?

If you go JUCO you can be drafted after your Fr and So years and all college baseball players are eligible to be drafted after their Jr year. I asked Borthick how high he thought Jebavy would go and he said he was told top 10 rounds for sure and possibly even top 5. The only reason he would come back if taken that high is if the signing bonus offered isn't very high. That's what got Zac Curtis last year, he had no option but to sign with Arizona so he took around $400k less of a signing bonus than his draft slot was allotted. Jebavy would have some leverage in his situation to get a better signing bonus since he could always go back to school and get picked higher (or lower). I would bet that we've only got 2-3 more games of Jebavy in a Blue Raider uniform.

Thanks for the link: No doubt I have been under the incorrect impression of how MLB draft rules affected JUCO players, both when at JUCO and after transferring to a 4 yr school. That said, I have briefly looked but have been unable to confirm that the rules I believed to be current were at one time legit. Still do wonder if the rules have changed from what I had thought.

All that said: at one time shortly after the community college system was established in TN it was obvious IIRC that JUCO BB was stronger than the best 4yr programs. A reason given was the JUCO coaches really used the "sooner to the pros" draft policy when recruiting. JUCOs and 4 yr schools had a lot of exhibition games at that time and IIRC CSCC was clearly the best college program in the area based on those exhibitions. Can someone report on the relative strength of the three mid-state JUCO BB programs when compared to the average mid-state 4 yr school at this time.

I went to the State baseball tournament game at Oakland High School yesterday. Soddy Daisy was playing Hendersonville. Got to watch a couple of MT signees. Both pitchers. The pitcher from Hendersonville(which didn't pitch yesterday but I was able to watch him a week ago) really impressed me. He could throw smoke and has a fast curveball that is hard for batters to catch until it is too late. He had a hard time throwing it for a strike though. He was rough coming from the stretch as well.He is a little raw but that is to be expected. Great upside and we will have him for 3+ years. The kid from Soddy pitched yesterday and he is more of a finesse pitcher. Both teams were big and really good. I thought I was watching a college baseball game. The future is looking bright.

Been thinking about this for a few days, I think on the individual level Jebavy had the better one and done campaign. I couldn't tell you the last guy we had who was all around as good as Jebavy, including Brentz. On the team level Dendy made everyone around him better and the team of course had better results with him. Both very good players and I feel lucky to have watched both play here.
