Mayor shame

MTSU is 100% taken for granted by Murfreesboro, the mayor, and Rutherford Co despite MTSU being the single biggest contributor and driver of the city's growth over the last several decades.

The lack of support from the city and local businesses is truly pathetic and unfortunately nothing will change because nobody cares about MTSU. Again, completely taken for granted. This cannot be understated.

It's a shame the university can't uplift itself and go somewhere else where it might be appreciated. Shane McFarland should be ashamed with his actions but sadly supporting UTK will probably be a politically favorable move throughout the town.....

The town needs some bold leadership who will go all in with MTSU Blue. People are generally sheep and will follow the trends and there are tons of said people in the greater Rutherford Co. area. If it ever becomes cool to like/attend MTSU our University/Sports are going to explode.

As an outsider not in the Boro, this is REALLY bad optics.

I could understand if the UT coach was from the Boro and played at Oakland or somewhere. But dude is from Missouri and played there from what I've found. Has zero connection to the mid-state at all. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It's the same as Troy or Jacksonville giving the key to Saban. Makes zero sense.

McFarland is saying you can be fans of both. Yes, you can. But as Mayor, he should put MT first. Period. If he was at every MT game no one would bat an eye if he went to Knoxville on our bye week. But that obviously isn't the case. He put UT over the school that made Murfreesboro what it is.

someone said on twitter while he was SGA president he was all Vols then, so it makes since.

The excuse he used was a player was from the Boro. Ok. Celebrate it, but a key to the city?... they already run the show in the state, you don't have to put it in peoples faces.

The whole university needs to do a better job of working with the city and forcing it.

I’m not condoning the action but the failure to effectively engage not only the Boro community, Nashville, and the midstate at large is McPhee’s and the board that has allowed little middle culture to stay exactly in its 1960s/70s status quo where it’s been ever since.

I think even McFarland feels that way.

sometimes i wish it were practical for MTSU to relocate away from Murfreesboro. Even then where? And would it be any better?

I don't think so. If our presidential leadership had continued on the same path as when we were under Dr Walker there is no telling where Murfreesboro & Middle Tennessee would be on a national perspective now.
Whether MT had been located at Shelbyville, Tullahoma, or Murfreesboro the powers that be did not like a man like Dr Walker in charge. To them he was too threatening a factor to their powers, & the universities "they" supported. Whatever mid-state town MT would be located in they knew a "yes" man would have to be in place. And that's what has become of us the last 20 years.
