Marshall beat writer said 12 of their 25 man class are not in camp. Including their top recruit and other highly rated recruits. Between that and our late additions surely our class is better than theirs.
came across this letter to editor in a WV paper complaining about Marshall being last in CUSA in academics. Interesting because the comparisons with CUSA schools...
...When Marshall moved to Conference USA, the other members were the University of Houston, offering Ph.D.s in 46 fields; Rice, 42 fields; Tulane, 38 ; Alabama Birmingham, 25; Central Florida, 24; Southern Methodist, 23; Southern Mississippi, 21; Memphis, 20; Eastern Carolina, 18; Texas El Paso, 18; and Tulsa, 14. Some of these have since left, and the new members are University of North Texas, offering Ph.D.s in 47 fields; Old Dominion, 41; Florida International, 31; Texas San Antonio, 24; North Carolina Charlotte, 19; Florida Atlantic, 18; Middle Tennessee State, 8; Louisiana Tech, 7; and Western Kentucky, 0.
The number of Ph.D. programs is significant, since original research, publishable in peer-reviewed journals, is required for a Ph.D. In general, the more Ph.D. programs offered, the more research is done, helping the academic ranking.
In football, Marshall last year ranked No. 1 in Conference USA and No. 23 in the country. Where does Marshall rank academically? US News and World Report publishes academic rankings of US colleges. This ranking separates schools into various levels, similar to different athletic levels. Highest are national universities, in which there are two tiers. There are 280 national universities, defined as offering a full range of undergraduate majors, plus master's and doctoral programs, and committed to producing groundbreaking research.
Next come national liberal arts colleges, followed by regional universities and regional colleges. Marshall is considered a regional university. Conference USA schools considered national universities, tier one, are Rice, ranked 19; UAB, 149; and Louisiana Tech, 201, tied with UNC Charlotte. (WVU ranks 168.) The other schools considered national universities are in tier two and listed as RNP (rank not provided), but in this order: FAU, FIU, MTSU, Old Dominion, UNT, USM, UTEP, and UTSA. Western Kentucky and Marshall are classified as regional universities south, comprising 132 schools, with WKU ranking 31st and Marshall 46th.
So Marshall ranks first in Conference USA in football, but last in academics. Of course, Marshall is fully accredited, has many strong academic programs and is capable of becoming the number one academic school. I hope our new university president and the university and community as a whole will place increased focus on academics. It's a matter of priorities.....
